Default Clearing Headlight Glass?

Hi everyone! I have an 03 convertible and the front headlights are not really clear. It looks like there is, the best I can describe, hard water deposits on the outside and i think on the inside. Is there a way to clean these so they are clear as new? I really don't want to buy new headlights. They aren't bad, i just really want a clear looking headlight!

This is a little off the wall, but I used a clay bar. Used it just like I would if it were paint and it worked great. It didnt make it look brand new, but it still looked ten times better. My headlight lenses were so bad, you coulnt even make out the inside of the light fixture. After i did the clay bar, everything is now very visible. I took a chance and it came out great.

Do you have before and after pics? I want to see how much of an improvement it made on your beetle.

I don't have any before pictures, but i will snap some pictures after. There was some residue on the lenses that wouldn't wash off with windex etc and the rubbing polish did a great job. Yours sounds worse than mine though, but i will try the clay bar. I have notices older bugs with really funky lenses, what causes this?
