Cool Electric Buffer Search/Opinion

I am trying to find a good electric buffer/polisher for my new boy. Anyone have any experience with the Porter Cable 7424? Gotta keep the paint glossy ( and swirl free!)

Thanks.
It sits out in the sun quite a bit. Winters can be a bit harsh.

Although I don't have any experience now, I am planning on getting a Porter Cable 7424. It is basically the industry standard for machine polishers and you can't go wrong if you find a good price. If the quality is anything like their other tools, it will last forever!

Good luck (and nice beetle!)
Matt

Default Need some advice

I jus got my Porter Cable 7424. I see it has number settings on the back. What numbers should it be set to for applying wax, remiving wax, polishing, etc..... I REALLY don't want to swirl my new black paint.

I've got an autozone here.. do they carry something similar to these there?

its only new paint because the car is new... but at this point there's no need to polish it... just use a clay bar and wax it by hand or by machine... if you do use your Porter be sure to let the wax dry completly and use a "light touch" or you'll swirl it for sure...

next year you can polish if needed but the factory paint holds up really well so if you keep it clean and waxed you shouldn't have to polish for a few years... I think I've done (polished) mine twice in the 4 years I've owned it... once after buying it, it had one owner before me, and once last year... paint still looks great..

jeromiej, I've a friend with a 7424. He got it shortly after he got his Black '06 Cobalt SS. It's been great, and we've learned alot about the paint care.

He gets all his detailing how-to info from http://www.properautocare.com/ There's alot to it, and it's great stuff. Dig in, learn it layer by layer.

Between their forum, and the "Detail Doctor" link, there's all the information you'll need to know.

I don't want to spend a lot of money. The Porter is kind of expensive. Can I get decent results with a cheaper one for around $20 or $30?
