Default Interior finish coming off

I am looking at used beetles to purchase one. I recently saw a 2007 with very low miles. It has an off white leather interior. I noticed the white finish around the shifter (auto) lever was peeling a little as if someone spilled nail polish remover on it and the white finish bubbled up like when you use paint remover to strip paint.

I noticed similar issues on two other vertical surfaces - a door panel and the face of the glove box. Any one experience this? Have any ideas what caused it? I like that interior color but will avoid it if this is a common problem.

I posted here because someone suggested it may have been caused by using the wrong cleaning product.

Off white leather interior? I have the "cream" interior in my 2007 NBC. could it be that someone may have "painted" the panels and shift handle in the bug in question? That might explain the peeling of the paint. My material around my shifter (tiptronic) is plastic/nylon and is the same cream color as my seats and lower door panels.

One other quick note here...I "doubt" the finish would bubble up if it were the "original" surface as the color is molded all the way through. My "best" guess is that those interior surfaces were painted.

door panels and Dash hhave a thin rubbery finish coat to give them a solid and smooth texture. I *think* the shifter area is bare. White? Sounds like a home-made paint-job.
