Default hey now...

i'm only getting the "crayon" smell whenever i turn the a/c knob from the coldest setting to a setting with "not so cold" air....

my guess is that this is normal and the cause of the "crayon" phenomena?

am i correct in this assumption or totally off base?

If I'm not mistaken, the crayon smell is from the waxy material that VW uses to seal the panels from water (rust prevention).

I cannot honestly say that my car smelled like crayons. I guess I don't know what that smell IS that you are describing. (As I am practically snorting a crayon up my nose right now to see what it smells like) My nose isn't working correctly, I don't think... anyway...
When I bought my car Brand New, (28 miles on it) I hated the smell. I put a box of Arm & Hammer baking soda on the floor of the back seat and after a while the smell was gone. The new baking sodas have a fabric like panel on them so the baking soda won't spill out.

I like the crayon smell...makes me feel even younger when I'm in the car. HAHA ..... MAYBE that's why everyone feels so young when owning a NB! Crayons!! The fountain of youth???

I thought the smell was gone from mine as I have driven him 230000 miles but he was sitting closed up for about a week & when I got in him to grab my I-Pass the smell was there. I like it.Like Michelle says, it makes you feel younger

I cant remember where but someone told me that it was due to the glue/adhesive under the carpets or something like that???

the MK3s and older had horse hair in the mats under the carpet, and the smell is very distinct. i don't know what they did with the MK4s, but i would assume the smell is coming from the same source, the mats. it could likely be an adhesive.

i bought my 2007 rabbit brand new and the "new car smell" was gone pretty quickly, kind of a bummer. it was totaled at 20 months with 21k on it, the smell was long gone. my 2003 beetle has a much stronger smell, after six years and 144k, and being topless which i would think would cause the smell to "run out" sooner. but no, it's there. my 17 year old MK2 had the very distinct MK2 smell.

The cause is discussed in one of the links I posted earlier. A few people were able to get rid of it.

Default crayon smell in 2001 standard VW New Beetle, diesel

I am having trouble with my 2001 VW Beetle. I purchased the car from the original owner and I did not detect the crayon smell right away. It wasn't until the summer months, that the smell intensified. I have been trying to get the smell identified. Did you contact the dealership and complain about the smell? I contacted VW Customer care online and they have been cooperating thru email. I asked for a field representative to evaluate the car and I want an air quality test done. She said "field representatives are actually dealership resources, and any arrangements for him to inspect one of our cars are made solely at the discretion of the dealership." She will make a request with our local dealership on my behalf. I am concerned the smell can be harmful.

I don't think the crayon smell is harmful in anyway. Though I'm no rocket scientist or anything...but there's nothing "wrong" with the car because it has that smell. My crayon smell has disappeared...and I didn't do anything I actually kinda miss it.

I guess if you don't like the smell, get a "new car smell" air freshener. Those things are so strong...I doubt you'd smell anything BUT the "new car smell"

But again...why erase that lovely crayon smell...I wish I knew what caused it and could get it back.

I agree - and I can honestly say it's one of the quirky things I just love about the NB's

It gets hot here. 100's. Mine not only smells like crayons, but ones that got melted in the sun... (hint, its a much stronger smell).

Not to mention the red/black leather with my color concept.

I almost named him Crayola.

Ahh this post cracks me up! For years people have been getting into my car telling me it smells like crayons in the back seat. I guess since I drive in my car everyday I am used to the smell, but I will say if I am traveling for a few hours I do notice I end up smelling like crayons in my hair, clothes, etc! I am so glad to know I am not alone on this one!
