Default Dash Gunk

The dash on my 2003 NB is soft and covered with gunk. Even the slightest touch leaves an impression. My bet is that the previous owner used the wrong cleaning product and destroyed the integrity of the dash material.

I simply tried to "scratch off" a spot of this gunk once and it left a gouge in the dash that I can't remove. Any remedies for the gunk and/or scratches?

Thanks!

It's not the owners fault- blame VW. It's what they called (and I hope i'm getting the terminology right)their "soft touch" interior.... good in theory and that's about it. Heat and time makes our interiors gunky. There's a ton of threads here concerning the matter- let me find one for ya....CLICK HERE. This is one of the first threads pertaining to the remedy of what you're facing. A lot of good info. Keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks! I'm glad to at least find out that 1) others have had this problem, and 2) it's something that can be addressed. I looked at the thread your sent and got some ideas. I tried rubbing alcohol and it worked beautifully on some pieces. Others - not so good. I also tried (don't grimace!) unleaded gasoline, Easy Off oven cleaner, Pine-Sol, and acetone, none of which worked on the "hard to strip" pieces. The dash is a mess and I'm not having much success, but I appreciate your help.
