Smile Ewa hits CHICAGO (without Ladybug:(

Hello to all Chicago Org members
This upcoming weekend I'll be visiting your great city. If you have any tips, recomendations, advice - please let me know.
Unfortunately I'll be Ladybugless. We're going in my dad's Accord (it's bigger). All 4 of us, including the dog will be rolling into Chicago sometime Saturday evening.
So if you see people in an Accord with Ontario plates waving at you - THAT'S US!

What part of Chicago are you visiting? Downtown, north side ,south side, suburbs? And how long are you going to be here?

Talking Just how 'windy' is your City?

I'll be staying at the Wyndham O'Hare Hotel, close to the O’Hare International Airport. Because of the long drive, we won't be there long. Arriving Saturday afternoon/evening, departing Monday morning. We'll be spending most of the time visiting with family, but I've never met them so I might need a bolt hole. What are the best sights in Chicago? (Museums, Galleries, Night Clubs, Shopping - not neccessarily in that order)?
And just how windy is the City, exactly?
We'll be driving through Detroit, and I'll be waving at NB's all the way!

Some will say it's Uno's others say it's Lou Malnates. I like them both and I also like a place called Superossa. It used to be called Nancy's till 10 or so years ago.
Go downtown to the Field museum, Shedd Aquarium, Millenium Park, the observation deck at the John Hancock building, Navy Pier. Woodfield Mall is huge for shopping, with a huge Ikea across the road, go downtown shopping at Water Tower Place, state street. I have no idea about night clubs, I'm an old fuddy duddy

Michigan Avenue and State Street downtown for the shopping experience
Museum of Science and Industry
Art Institute
just to name a few...

Honestly just walk around the city, you'll find tons of stuff...Millenium Park, Lake Shore Drive, great shops, excellent food. I just spent all weekend in Lincoln Park with my best friend and I always forget how much I love Chicago!

Thanks for the good info, JenBug & Lnzbug! I'll mapquest your suggestions so I can find these places easily when I make my escape from the family circle.
Also, are there areas I should avoid? I live in a large city myself, so it's in no way a put-down. Just don't want to get in trouble if I walk around by myself in the evening.

Yea.....ditto to all of the above! Do as much as you can...

The Blue Line is right there for you if you don't want to drive downtown. Take that to Grand Ave. and you are a nice little walk from the lake shore!

Ohh...tidbit of info....if you take the Blue to Grand you come up right across the street from Emmet's Pub which was in Oceans 11.....

I'm partial to Gino's East pizza ... 2 locations in downtown, and I bet there's one out by O'Hare.

Otherwise, sight-seeing, museums, and shopping always seem popular with my out-of-town guests. The architectural boat tours are always a hit too ... if the weather is nice. Wendella runs a nice tour, and they're located on the riverfront off Michigan Ave.

Have fun ... the weather is supposed to be pretty nice this weekend.

Gino's East and Lou Malnati's are both good joints, but I prefer Giordano's (many locations around Chicago and 'burbs) and Pizzeria Uno in Downtown Chicago on Ohio Street.

If you want to try a real Chicago treat that I always enjoyed when I worked there is a Brazilian restaurant called Fogo de Chao. It is a Brazilian-style churrascaria that serves a great buffet of all types of meat like beef, chicken and sausages. Kinda pricey, but if you are hungry and enoy a great meal of lots o' beef, this is the place to go. Here is the link to da joint:

Smile How nice to see so much pride in your city!

Thanks guys! More interesting suggestions than I could shake a stick at. I'll definitely check out as many as I have time for, amidst the family bonding. I'd love to meet some Org members out there, but I'm afraid there just won't be time. On the other hand, if you'd like to have a coffee at my hotel and show me your bug, I'm in! I'll try to get on the org again before I leave.

Oh man, that place is great. Just a word of warning though, you better fast for a whole day before going because you have a tendency to try everything and eat way too much!

Talking Now I'm back

I had a great trip. Most of my time was spent meeting the family, but we did see a bit of downtown and waterfront. I really liked Milenium Park with the pixel-board fountains. We had great weather. The city is just immense, and sooooo busy! All the people were really nice and helpful, and I saw a lot of NB's.
Thanks for the info, everyone. Next time I'll have more time to explore your magnificent city
