Yeah - court would suck - the guy that hit me 2 november's ago kept threatening a lawsuit so I have kept my mouth shut about my accident until the statute of limitations are up later this month.

That looked pretty nasty...lots of bent metal.

There's no apostrophe before an 's' when you're talking about the plural version of a word. "I took some neat photo's!" is NOT correct.

You going to replace er' with another NB? Looks like it did exactly what is was supposed to in keeping you safe. It did a real number on the truck!
Most cars today have no actual "sensor" or pin that causes the airbags to deploy. They use an inersia switch in the cabin. Side airbags, if equipped, should have deployed.
Glad you're ok!!

So both cars were totaled? I'm PDF'ing this thread to show folks how sound the structure is of these cars, and also to prove once and for all that my car could kill my friend's ranger (even if it was a martyr mission)

Hey MOB,
I know it's kinda touchy subject but are you able to access parts off of your car? Or is already gone or what? You could make some money off of the headrests, foglights, etc. Stuff that even if you don't buy the car back from the insurance persay, you could remove, and they would be none the wiser.
Say for example you remove the aftermarket radio, etc. I would be interested in that radio surround you have. Plus a couple cupholders, etc.
Stuff like that you could make some jingle on for yourself, just a thought.

I should have posted about this earlier.

I'm not gonna be buying the car back from insurance. We still had some payments left on it so I want the value they quote to be as high as possible.

That said, we did take off of the car a few things they wouldn't notice, like hubcaps, back shelf, emblems etc. I was going to post a sale thread on the forum, but I haven't gotten the free time yet to take pics and write it up.

I can't get anything else off the car at this point, as it is at the insurance company's claim center lot.

And yes, it appeared at the scene that both cars were totalled. I know mine will be deemed so because I tried to put it in park after the crash, but the gear selector lever was tilted about 45 degrees from the vertical, meaning the engine shifting had rotated and torqued the tranny. We haven't heard an official word from insurance yet. They just keep calling with little questions like "when did you buy the car" and "what was its last known mileage".

Kris,

Thank God you're able to tell the story. Sorry about your baby. Buttercup was so looking foward to meeting her. Even so, she wants to meet Becca, so you're not off the hook. Speaking of off the hook, don't even think of leaveing this here org. You're part of this community big time. Wouldn't be the same without you bro.

What it looks like to me is that the Bug stood up quite well the a very hard hit. The cabin area is not deformed. It is a credit to VW that you are able to walk away.

I lost control on a slick highway 8/05 and struck a bridge going 30 mpg SIDEWAYS(I'm now a great believer is side air-bags) and walked away without a scratch. I punched the driver's door in at the hinge, 12 inches.

In cases where it is discretionary what the officer did, I would argue to see what exactly he wrote and by what witnesses the officer determined fault. In actuality, the law says you can go left across traffic ONLY when it is clear. Pleading Not Guilty in most states, you can ask for a pre-trial conference with the prosecuting attorney. They will usually look at the evidence and may reduce fines and consider contributory cause. I'd seek legal counsel in your state.

Depending on too many variables to discuss here, this is a case that you should attempt to fight. Many states, it is a requirement to stop if able. It seems the other driver was contributory. Assigning blame will reduce the affect to your insurance premiums.

Guess I should update everything. Once the insurance company finally decided it was totaled, they paid off the loan company first (we still owed ~$5000), then sent us a check for $1200. Apparently, it only cost the insurance company $600 to fix the Ranger, because that's the last we heard of it. I thought the Ranger looked totaled too, but I guess it wasn't.

I haven't been able to tell yet how much my insurance rates went up, because we added my 18 year old sister at the same time and they shot up like a rocket anyways.

I've still got the bits I pulled off to put for sale here on the org. I'll post a link once I get the pics taken.

What bits do you have for sale?! I was interested in any of the painted ones when all this happened... any of those?

The bits I have for sale are here: FS: Lotsa beetle parts

We didn't hardly anything at all off the car once it was wrecked, because we wanted the assessed value for insurance to be as high as possible. The stuff I'm selling is mostly what came off back when I put my mods on.

No interior bits, sorry.

That's what they said. They paid us (well the bank and then us) around $6500 and only paid out $600 to the repair shop for his truck to get fixed. Unless his insurance picked up the rest (which I doubt), a new hood, quarter panel, bumper, grill, headlight, radiator, and motor mounts (if nothing else) must only cost $600 total for Ford Rangers.

I was also impressed that we got that much for my 98 beetle with 92k miles on the clock.

Has the windshield ever been replaced in your Bug? It should not pop out like it did.

If it was replaced, I would not use that glass company ever again.
