My dad had a black '69 and I loved it; however my mom did not, so we sold it before I got my drivers license.
I have run into a few hardcore Bug enthusiasts and they all say the same thing, it’s not a bug for the following two reasons; it’s not air cooled and the engine is in the front. I approach this issue from this perspective; do I really want my children to be exactly like me? No, that would be boring... Also, the wife and I call ours "Bugs" as often as we call them "Beetles"... ![]() |

My father bought a red Beetle around 1968 or 1969. I loved that car and have many fond memories of it.
I did a bunch of mods to it when I had any spare time (interior, sound, racing stripes, air socks, fat rear tires, a schlitz beer tap handle on the shifter) and then I couldn't understand why my father (the vp of a bank) stopped driving the car to work!!! The two things that I really loved about the car was that it was so easy to work on and with the engine in the back I could drive over Loveland Pass (in Colorado), in a blizzard, without tire chains, and was able to pass a snowplow! If I could, I would have another old beetle - for fun and to tinker with - but I would NEVER give up Miss Ruby - she's just too special. I love both versions of the Beetle, for completely different reasons - they just can't be compared.
