Default automatic transmission..

i was referred to this forum and have found many many answers.

one thing i was kinda hoping i could get more input on is automatic transmissions. i am about to take over a 2004 NB GLS that hs roughly 34,500 miles on it. my dad's mechanic swears up and down that the transmission is going to fail on me once i hit 50K or so miles. he also mentioned that VW's are too much work...

my question is has anyone had any bad things happen to their automatic transmission near these miles? and if so, what kinda problems were they?

thanks a bunch!!

check the trans forums on this site, very helpful and informative especially since there are many auto-1.8t'ers. the short story is the trans is fairly robust, but the trans fluid and filter should be changed in or around 50-70k miles (even though vw says it never needs to be)

post this in the transmission tech section.

VW says that their trans is good to 100K without maintenance. That is not true. The fluid and filter should be changed every 50K or so.

If you service the trans at regular intervals, then you will help to prevent problems in the future, but this does not mean that you're out of the woods. Parts can fail at any time for any part of your car, so if you maintain your trans, but it does fail at, say, 65K, then so be it.

It was Yahoo Answers, right?
Glad you made it here and welcome.

Moderators: could you please move this post to the transmission section of the forum, for more exposure/relevancy?
