Default A Moment of Silence - RIP Spirit 3

On the morning of September 10, 2007, while driving through an intersection in Dallas during a thunderstorm, Spirit was caught by a freak flash flood. The TDI gave out as waves rolled over the hood. Sitting dead in the intersection along with eight other cars, with the waters rising, attempts to bring her back to life were unsuccessful. I was forced to exit the car and, with the help of a Department of Transportation worker, pushed her through nearly knee-deep water out of the way of traffic.

Three hours later, she was at a local dealership. After the techs went to work on her, I was told today of the prognosis.

They pumped well over a gallon of water from the TDI. Cylinders destroyed. Shafts broken. Turbo blown. Injectors ruined. On and on it went. Parts alone will be well over $10,000.

It is all but certain that she will be totaled by insurance. I have been long gone from here, but wanted to return to tell of the loss of Spirit. She fought it, but could not withstand nature.

Please be careful when driving in heavy thunderstorms. I only lost my car - things might not go so well for you.

Goodbye, Spirit.

oh Kevin! I'm so sorry! I cannot imagine. I hope you were able to salvage some of your goodies. You have been missed and now this car will be missed too. Good luck with your next project.

So sorry about this! I was stuck on the highway in a Houston massive storm a few years ago on the way to the DFW area. They say everything's bigger down there, so it makes sense that the storms would be, too. I can't believe this! So terrible, but I am of course glad you got out safely. I hope you'll be sticking with the Beetle and show us a Spirit IV. I've always enjoyed your cars at shows!

I'm sorry she couldn't be saved. I assume aside from the catastrophe under the hood, the interior is probably pretty bad?

Hope you stick with the NBs and show us a new Spirit

Assuming she is totaled (and I don't imagine she won't be), I'll grab whatever I can off her. The roof rack and BRMs are already saved.

I will not be in another New Beetle, but I will be in a Volkswagen. Her replacement is a 2004.5 1.8T Passat GLS wagon in the hyper-rare Samoa Red (only about 1200-1400 total '04.5 Passats were made in the color, only a handful of which were wagons) with Pure Beige leatherette interior.
