I think there's a take-away moral here though: steel skid plates are worth the money. We put one of those one both of our VWs within a month of buying them (largely because a friend of mine went through exactly what you went through, albeit with a Jetta rather than a NB). All VWs (other than the Touareg) have very low oil pans, especially the NB. Both of our cars have been saved more than once by those skid plates....
I thought the same thing when I read the description of the fatal piece of wood. I'm so glad I installed my Panzer Plate a month or so ago.

You could always drop a whole bunch of batteries, electric motor and other goodies and go for an e-Beetle. I've been thinking about that...cost of the conversion is probably close to what you would get a good used beetle for though.

I'm going to wait on the BRMs. The tires that are on the BRMs have about 12k on them, and they are "sporty" tires that aren't good for all that long. So I'm going to leave the stock rims and brand new tires on until after the Dragon. That will save 2000 miles of wear on the older tires. Maybe we can photoshop the BRMs on?

After 8 years of rocking 17' wheels, the stock 16" wheels look REALLY small!

I'll post a proper picture thread soon...
