Default Buying another Nb! 1.8t or TDI?

Hey guys, its been just over a week since trading in my yellow and black,99,2.0 auto. Ever since I made that horrible decision,I've notice just how bad other cars blow,

I hated the vette, tried the Rx-7s...nothing was as cool as my beetle.

So,I'm looking to try something new,either a 1.8T or a TDI,with a 5speed of course

Would any fellow non-2.0 owners share their experiences with either their 1.8 or tdi,the good, the bad,and the awesome! .

I will take 28 days to decide, convince me which one is the most fun.

1.8s-Fast

1.9-Smokescreen,sound cool,last longer.

That's all I know.

Thanks

had a 2.0 5 speed beetle and would steal the keys to my wifes tdi as often as I could

tdi's have a bad rap for not being able to be made fast...check out tdiclub.com for ideas of what this car is capable of..more power you get the better your MPGs get(as long as you go about it the correct way)

if you want a high horsepower car that you can wrap out to 7000 rpms then get the 1.8t..if you want a car that makes gobs of power and gets better fuel mileage than any of the other options out there get the tdi

nozzles, exhaust(mufflerectomy just run a straight pipe), tune and you will be throwing down some decent numbers and will be giving the 1.8ts a show of your taillights that is if they can see them through the smoke

I'll be honest, I know nothing about the TDI's .. but I do know that I am in love with my 1.8T!! I've had her almost a year now, and I have had to do some maintenance, but that's with any car.. they are more expesive to repair than 2.0L obviously.. but my car is a blast!! I love the way she runs and I love the pep & power! I'm sure either choice will be a great one! Good luck!!

Forum won't let me select edit button from blackberry :-/

We sold our snap orange color concept(1.8t) new beetle so we could get the tdi golf. We wanted another beetle but the deals we were finding didn't compare to the deal we got on the mk4(101xxx miles, new upper half of motor/turbo replaced by dealer at 100k and we paid 9k for it)

We've put 90000 miles on car and have only done timing belt/water pump and oil changes(knock on wood)

Glad to hear you're coming home mang! There's just something about these bugs

Of course, i'm partial to the 1.8, but I did vote for the 1.9TDI. I know a few who've hopped-up their TDI's and they're no slouch by no means; and the gas milage is wallet-friendly. Even so, I think your chances of findig a 1.8 will be easier than finding a TDI.

There's a nice TurboS here in Jax at a very reputable dealer. 56k on the clock and they just knocked 1k off their asking price. now 7995. HERE'S THE LINK. It would be well worth the drive to Jacksonville- we can do a celebratory GTG afterwards

I have had 2 of the 2.0s and a 2.5. When I trade Ernie in, It will be a 2.5. My wife doesn't like to drive NBs because she says there is a blind spot that aggravtes her, but she loved my 2.5! She made a comment the other day that she hoped I decided to go with another one of those Fast ones!

I had to cast my vote for the 1.8 because one makes me smile every morning. I say go for the gusto and grab the Turbo S in Jacksonville. You'll be glad you did.

1.8T

For what you have to give for a TDI, you can buy a 1.8T and mod it heavily for the same money. For the record my average MPG on my APR'ed 1.8T just went over 32! (but then I am on highway w/ cruise on for 90% of my miles)

TDI all the way. Take care of the engine and it will last a long time. Great sound (even at stock) and it's a great feeling to leave tailgaters in the smoke! I haven't done any performance mods but I know it's fairly inexpensive to do and you gain a lot.

but for a little more money you can have more power and almost double that fuel economy teacher at my last school was getting 60mpg and had 250 WHEEL torque that car was so much fun to drive

how far of a commute do you have?

Don't be scared of a tdi with high mileage as long as it comes with a detailed service history..ours currently has 191000 and we could sell it for the same if not more than we paid for it 4 years ago..There was a guy selling a tdi beetle with a little over 200k for pretty cheap in the for sale section..

It's really going to be up to you.

I can say this. My first Beetle was a 1998 2.0 Beetle. He was ok.... but the 2.0 didn't have the pep or zip that I wanted.

I test drove a 2002 TDI, and it was good on mileage, but stock, it needed mods to make it responsive.

Then I got my 2002 1.8T 5 speed. Talk about pep and zoom and fun. I love it!
I even got to drive a couple 2003 1.8T Turbo S 6 speeds, they are nice too.

If you didn't mind spending the extra money, get a nice, gently used TDI, put a few bucks into it (re : $2,000) to get it chipped, a few minor upgrades, and it WILL smoke a 1.8T any time of day or night and get twice the mpg doing it.

If I could go back and do it again, I'd get a TDI.

One of the org members locally here, Jetpuff, put me to shame SEVERAL times at GTG's. My 2002 1.8 could NOT keep up with it off the line, I just saw tail lights and he was off down the road.

If I had the money I'd swap out my 1.8T motor for a TDI , make a couple mods, and just zoom off down the road. BUT, with that said, if you are going for stock performance, 1.8T is the way to zoom

I would say this... I drove a tdi quite a bit when I dated a guy who had a beetle. I love tdi's but the high resale on them; or when they are in good shape to me isn't worth it. Diesel is always more expensive then 91. Then again I don't return 49 MPG...
For the record though, I think alot of people who drive hybrids/tdi's like to exaggerate the MPG's they get... Not saying I doubt its not possible to get 49mpg in a beetle on the highway, i'm saying anything more then that i'm going to scratch my head at?

I'm currently in stop & go traffic as far as my daily commute, however, towards the end of summer, ill be moving to new mexico.

Not sure what the traffic is like in the dessert, but I'm sure its lots of highway.

In that case,I'm leaning towards the TDI because I WILL be doing mods and I would loooove to smoke out some ricers

Thanks guys,keep the stories comin'.

Thanks Scarab, ill look into the Turbo S.

You know how we do it mang. Us beetle boys gotta look out for each other.

I know the TS ain't no TDI, but you won't be sorry if you got it. I saw a red Color Concept for sale in one of those auto trader-like publications, with about 92,000 miles on the clock for about 1500.00 more than the TS. I couldn't vouch for the dealer it was from, but I do know that the dealer that has the silver TS, Overby's is a very hi-end dealer of well renown here in Jacksonville. Don't delay though mang- 7995 is a sweet deal for that bug. What you lose in having no smoke in a TDI, you'll gain in the performance wow factor! It's no TDI, but the gas mileage ain't all that bad either

I agree TDI or Turbo S.

In flat New Mexico you will get great mpg.
My mpg breakdown:
Flat highway=50mpg
Hilly city driving=42mpg

What don't you like about the vette?
