My husband thought the beetle was the gayest car out there. That's until he test drove mine. He came back with a smile on his face bigger than when we married in 2004!!!
Every time I say I'll drive, he'll get in there and not budge, taking the back roads so he can give her a good run - switching her to sport mode and really putting his foot down.
He used to own a Jaguar XK8 - and I never saw him enjoy that car as much as he enjoys mine..

Well i think if most guys knew what a blast they are to drive be many more male drivers..i do see a guy drive a Cyber green one on my drive into work..and seems he has a perm a smile everytime i see him..also my friend in England had a nBC in 07 but a Landrover destroyed it by rolling over it He had it ordered to his wants and loved it for the short 5 months he owned
so there are many closet Beetle male drivers lol

Unhappy

Every guy that asks me why I'm driving a "chic car" for; my reply is "have you drivin it?" and they usually say "no", to which I reply "then shut up till you have" (as politely as possible). We bought my wife a Dodge Magnum R/T which is fast and fun....but still not as fun as the beetle. She asks to drive the Beetle ALL the time, I think shes getting really sick of me telleing her "watch out for the parking blocks!!"

In my area most NB drivers are men. The ladies around here are all driving Mustangs, they love them for some reason. That's the chick car around here.

Just realized that's true around here too! Funny!

Beetles are easy to make cute, with the flower vase and flower light covers, polka dots etc. So they are often seen as feminine cars. Guess I don't mind being the one going against the crowds. Lots of men drive beetles in my area, but I notice of lot of them are closer to my age. I think the younger guys are still a little uncertain of their masculinity. Around here they tend to drive huge pickups. Wonder if Freud would have something to say about that?

I agree, when I lived in Louisville, (which I still consider home), the men I saw driving NBs were rarely teenagers, more were middle aged guys like myself. I would have to say though in Louisville, it would be about 50/50 on the ratio of men versus younger girls. To me the only similarity between a guy's NB and a girls is the shape of the car. That is what is so great about these wonderful cars of ours. You can personalize them so easily!!! If a girl drives one, you will see more femanine thins on the car, but I can tell a guys bug just as quickly. The guy will have a pen or something in his budvase, I saw one that ws a Veteran of one of the wars, he had a bunch of flags in his budvase. Some guys like to put a plush daisy or a realy flower in their bug as well, more power to them!!! I'm driving my third bug since 2003, and I love them better everyday!! Good Thread!

I see a pretty decent amount of guys in NBs around campus. There is a dark green bug I see every few weeks, always a guy driving.

I see men driving beetles all the time around here, most beetle drivers are women but I have seen a lot of men driving them.

My bf hates my car, he thinks it is very much a chick car, he refuses to drive it and always talks about hating VW period. I had him drive yesterday but my car was acting up so he was frustrated, maybe I can get him to drive when she is fixed

I suppose it is just one of those things, Casey, some people get all bent out of shape, about certian cars or makers, but I guess it's what the owner of the ride thinks and feels about it. I have only had someone say something to me one time in 7 years about driving a "girly" car. I just smiled and said Mr. This isn't a girly car, it's my car I smiled and went on about my business. Life's too short

You'd be surprised that many cars beside our beetles are easy to make cute. Granted the happy nature of the beetle supports your statement, but i see many a pickup truck, jeep, mustang, mini, you get the picture, accessorized and cutesy looking.

I'm amazed at dudes who look at Cup and say, something to the effect of "Dude i'd own a bug if it looked like that". Or something to the effect of how my bug totally changed their perception of a beetle. It's the gender of the driver that determines if it's a chick car/dude car, not the car determining the gender of it's make.

To answer your question, it's about 50/50. in the early years of the nB's exsistance, it was mostly women, now the percentages are about even.

bottom line, drive what you like. If we live to please everybody, we'll never please ourselves.

EXACTLY, I was kinda the same way, not exactly a chick car, but didn't think a car I would really like. My wife wanted one and I said ok, but since you can't drive a stick...I get to choose the engine, either a turbo or TDI, because I wanted to make sure she had a vehicle that would have the power if and when the time calls for it. Low and behold, there was this Yellow TDI NB at this dealership for 4 months before we started looking and when we were looking, it was still there, a week later, it's sitting in our driveway . When I started driving it, I caught the "bug" and been hooked ever since.
Then I have been noticing all the NBs driving around and was like..."wow there sure are alot more than I thought" And even more so, to my surprise, plenty of men drivers, young and old. There is also a company around here in the medical field and 95% of their fleet are white/blue and white/red beetles (white body, blue or red fenders)

LOL - see I've made Lady into a definite "chick car" with the yellow daisies and lady bugs - it's so amusing to be driving along and everyone points and smiles at the "girlie car" and then I can just take off - apparently it's easy to overlook the Turbo S badge, or not think that if the car is that personalized, it's probably got something goin on under the hood too!

Only my cousin and my dad will drive Lady themselves - and only with the darkly tinted windows up - everyone else is okay with riding shot gun, but not driving (and most of them I wouldn't let drive her anyway - especially my hubby!)
