Default Do you refer to your bug as "he" "she" or "it" when talking about him/her?

Some of you have seen my thread about being broken down in Chicago. Well the funniest thing has happened since we have been here. I was talking a mile a minute,(I only do that when i'm awake and breathing), and I was telling my Sister and her hubby, on the way to their house the other night. I said something about Ernie. Carolyn smiled and the rest had a very confused look on their faces. Sis said, who is Ernie? I said Ernie is my sweet Bug! She asked if I realized that I speak about my vehicle as if it were a person? I said, I sure do, Ernie is a boy, he has a Birth Certificate to prove it. The got quiet again, as if they expected the Men in the little white coats to come carry me away. I said, guys, Ernie is a part of our family. These cars have a personality, besides, It's a Bug Thing, you wouldn't understand. (yes, I stole that from Jeep), I almost always referred to all 3 of my NBs as he. Does anyone else get a kick out of the looks on peeps faces when you speak about your baby as if?

I always refer to Fiona as either "Fiona" or "she" and my bf thinks I am absolutely bonkers, he makes fun of me all the time but yesterday he was even calling my car "she" saying "hopefully she will get us home" "she is just mad" "she this, she that" it was kinda funny

Thats so cool! My grandchildren LOVED it when I got my first NB and their Nana & Poppy called the car Felix, saw the birth certificate hanging on the wall in my office. My grnad daughter, who was almost 7 when I got Felix, thought it was the best thing in the world to "name" a car. She said Poppy, this is a little car, I fit it, can I drive Felix? I said honey, when you are a teenager, you may drive him. Ironically, it didn't matter to her that I traded Felix in, she wanted to know what is this one's name? We went down to her house to her twin brothers birthday party in Feburary, they had it at their church. I was sitting there talking to some family and Hannah came up to me, Poppy, guess what today is? Your Brothers birthday? Yes but guess what else? I said the day you drive Ernie? She smiled so wide and said yeah. She had turned 13 3 weeks before. I said well, a promise is a promise. And we went out into the parking lot, not many cars, I got in with her and she did great, She said I have to have one of these!!!! She actually did great. So all the grandkids know who Ernie is when I mention him.

I guess I must be the odd one out. I have had my VW Squareback for 15 years and have never had a name for her, but do call it "she" or "her". I have only had my NB for 10 months and have taken to calling her "White Lightening" but again, still no person's name. I think cars have been named both male and female names over time, but if you think about the songs about cars, they seem to use" her" or "she" more often.

409- "She's real fine my 409"

Little Deuce Coupe - "She's got a competiition clutch with a four on the floor, and she purrs like a kitten til the lake pipes roar"; "If I had a set of wings man I know she could fly"; She's ported and relieved and she's stroked and bored"

Drag City - "Just tuned my car, now she really peels"

Greased Lightening - One of the most famous car song lyrics that are x rated and they have now had to remove when shown on TV, but the original lyrics are still on the DVD (I think) "You know that I ain't braggin', she's she's a real ..... wagon" Look the up on songlyrics.com.!

That is strange, I have owned 4 air cooled vans, and 2 bugs and with the exception of the 74 Super Beetle I had sandwiched in between 2 NBs, I never named any either. The first time I named a car I have a 67 olds roayle, I called him Old Gray. I sold him for 300 bucks after I drove him 3 or 4 years, I found out later that the lady who bought him from me, gave him to her grandson, and he died one day on the RR tracks right in the middle of Old Fort, NC and the train T Boned poor Old Gray became Dead Gray. Thankfully the grandson escaped.

Lady's a she... and now with Lola I talk to both of them about their sister!

Now if I could just convince the hubby that Lola is a girl and likes her name (and therefore I should order her plate to reflect it) and does not appreciate being called the "waskly wabbit" in an Elmer Fudd voice...

Probie is a "he". He hates it when people call him "cute".
I have to beat it into Matt sometimes that Probie is a "he" not a "she". When he says "she's..." he'll quickly correct himself, "I mean...HE...seems to be running well". LoL. But people do think I'm crazy.

I talk about my car and my pets like they were real people. So, in my conversation you may hear, "well Probie did this" or "Blitzen did that" or "Summer did this". LOL It sounds odd for sure!

I attempt to explain that the cars are like pets.

And the pets are my children.

And the children are for dinner.

But no one gets it!
