Here's one for the collective:
Way back in '98 or '99, someone, somewhere asked if there were any parts in common between the vintage Beetle and the New Beetle, since both were manufactured at the same factory. Somebody, maybe a VW exec, said that both cars shared only two parts. The first shared part is the horn that beeps when you arm your alarm. After all these years, I think I finally found what the second part is..... But, before I reveal my guess, let's hear what you think it might be. Good luck!!!

I managed to find an old Finnish car magazine, which is published in 25.11.1998. There is an article of the New Beetle.
They wrote something like this: " There used to be one common and interchangeable piece between Old and New Beetle. That piece was some kind of rubber item, which protects/holds the headliner in Old Beetle. In New Beetle that part was used to protect/hold the screw for warning hazard triangle and first aid kit. The part number for that item is 113 867 649." They also wrote, that "this part is now replaced by a little bit fancier one, so it does not exist any more". I really don´t know, if this is true... At least it is my best guess. |

Picture #1 is a vintage Beetle door panel clip and rubber boot.
Picture #2 is the underside of the trunk mat. You can see three black posts on the straight side. Picture #3 is a close up of one of the plastic posts - it has the exact same rubber boot on it. The straight side of the mat is the side that butts up against the seatback and the three posts insert into holes in the trunk floor. I took the mat out to hose it down and scrub it out after a can of Coke froze in the trunk last winter and leaked out. Cleaned up nicely and I let it dry out for a few days before I put it back in the car. Methinks that the old car/new car part-in-common mystery has been solved! Good guesses everyone!!! |
