The time has come , went to a used car dealer and found a 98 lincoln town car pearl in color that looks like its brand new except it has 227 thousand miles , so we took the car and drove it for 6 hours , its perfect , I have owned many Lincolns and they are very good cars , we once talked to a man who had 750 thousand miles on his but it was all highway miles as a wide load lead car , heard of many with over 300 thou without trouble , now this cannot be said for our bugs the trans in ours a 98 is starting to shift hard and the cost to replace would be more than the car is worth also the lincoln got 22 mpg the day we drove it , dealer said he would trade even and if the trans in it were to fail you can get one from a scrap yard from a wrecked ford and it will fit for 200 dollars and 200 labor.

Bummer... Paul or Ringo? (since John and George have already passed...)

Good luck with the Lincoln.

Ditto. Every older used Lincoln I've ever had contact with was a POS in the electronics--lots of stuff not working in all that gadget-y crapola/dash/power accessories, but, he's right, cheap tranny fixes.
