Looked like an idiot out in the parking lot detailing my car in 30 degree weather, snow and ice on the ground, and about a 30mph wind, but it was worth it! Removed the rear headrests for better rear vision, and was AMAZED at how much difference it made! I highly recommend this to anyone with a 2012 Beetle IF you don't expect to have rear seat passengers.

Pulled the intake box/engine cover off and installed a K&N air filter. I've done this before on 2.5 liter engines, and it's a pretty easy thing to do. You'll need a torx head bit and ratchet for the two screws holding the flex duct to the air intake port, a good pair of vise grips to open the clamp on the round intake hose (slide the clamp up (towards the windshield), not down over the flexible hose, as this clamp is strong when released, and will distort the flexible hose if released when around it), and a Philips screwdriver. Total installation time about 15 minutes, and there is a noticeable improvement in acceleration, especially on the highway!

Btw, a6m5serosen you inspired me to get off my duff, put a couple of sweaters on and get to work on my neglected bug.

Pics to follow, but I got some things done I've been wanting to do for a while.

Then I took on cleaning up the headlight's. Didn't realize how bad the lens had become pitted.

Came out ok, will have to do this again in the spring..

And while I had the housing out of the car, it was a good time to switchout the bulbs.

Going up to Vermont next week, so I am trying out the Gold bulbs for all of those snowy roads...

Let everyone know how I like them in a couple of weeks.

Oh, have one from back in early December that I did not get a chance to post back then..

Took my daughters to pick out our Christmas Tree, and we stopped at a Brusters from some Ice Cream on the way home with the tree.

Enjoy..

Finally had a sunny day so gave Jolene a good washing inside and out. She looks SO much better! I also got her a blue flower to hang from her rear view mirror. She looks great now!

Checked the air pressure in the spare tire in my brand new 2012 Beetle-I've had it for two months, and the space saver spare is supposed to be serviced to 60psi, but it only had 35. Who knows how many months ago it was aired up at the factory? I serviced it to 65psi and resolved to check it every month or so. How long has it been since you checked yours? It could sure save you from a major hassle-one flat is bad enough, but a flat spare will really ruin your day....

Good advice! It happened to me. I hit a chuckhole leaving a gas station which popped a bead on my front left tire. I changed the tire with my spare not thinking about checking the pressure and sure enough 20 miles down the road that spare blew out and I was stranded on the road at night with snow falling and windchill below Zero. That taught me a very important lesson. Never drive off without checking your pressure in your spare.

BTW, I hate people that drive on that little spare for months at a time. It is suppose to only get you home or to the nearest gas station and that is about it. Also those spares are only rated to about 50mph. But some people drive like maniacs way over 70mph on the highway with those things. That is just irresponsible and you not only endanger yourself but others around you as well.

Bath day for Herbie today too, it has been wet around here for a week or so and the bottom of my beetle was covered in clay.

Got hit on the head by the rear hatch once too often yesterday. The pistons after 14 years just can't hold it up when it gets cold. Purchased new at the VW dealership, good price too (same as ECS and no shipping on top), and put them on.

Took only five minutes, they just pop on and off with a clip to hold them in place that can be pulled with a small flat head screwdriver.

Now the hatch rather than falling down on my head not only stays open, it will open itself from the halfway point.

Oh, if you ever do replace these, make sure to put a brace to hold the hatch or be 6 feet or taller and hold it up with your head. Even old pistons take a ton of the weight and that hatch is actually really heavy.
