Default OOOHHH That Smell, Can't Ya Smell That Smell..

When you bought your bug, did it have a distict smell? Wether it was new or used, I have sat in over 8 bugs and every single one smells like a brand new box of crayons! The blue crayon especially. Anybody else smell it or am I cracking up!

Lol... you are not crazy, well, are you?? Actually the first time I rode in a bug was when I met my wife... and that thought crossed my mind immediately, weird! Now all these years, I thought it was just the diesel engine she has... so you are telling me all beetles smell like this? Don't forget there is also a cabin filter fan, maybe that needs to be changed to?

Maybe it's the same pigment used in your car paint and the crayon! OR a melted blue crayon embedded and hidden somewhere in the cabin! Down in the defroster, where it rolled, from the PO? You've been running your heat, right?

This goes for my car too. It's kind of a pleasant smell, smells sweet, better than the smell of mold but who knows, it could be a cancer causing fungus that had formed underneath the floor mat or something. Do some more digging around on the org and eventually you will wander across a thread or two on this particular subject. Oh... and I'm only joking about that cancer causing fungus bit.

Smurfette smelled like crayons when I bought her but doesn't since I changed the cabin filter.. I also keep an air filter from bath and body works in there.. But there were actual melted crayons in her back seat. My poor baby... Lmao

I know when I got mine it smelled a little like mold bc, the person who had it before left the sunroof open when it rained. SO.. soon I am going to get the headliner replaced and see about getting the smell out. Although Im used to it by now. Sometimes I can smell the crayon smell too, my dad agrees with the crayon smell too.

I have seen this comment often here on the Org throughout the years. I have never thought my '06 TDI had the crayon smell at all.

However, last time I got a loaner from my dealership (oil change), they gave me a 2005 NB to drive. The first thing I thought when I sat in it was "Crayons!"

Someone once posted that they thought it was related to the adhesive used under the carpet. Who knows?

my husband thinks that it may be from the painted door panels inside and once they heat up it would release that smell. think about it, besides the nb, there really is not another car with door panels painted and exposed on the inside! just my thoughts.

In a funny kind of way though, we like the smell. That's it we a certifiable in the states of NJ, PA, NC, and SC!!!

I was kidding about the same blue pigment in the paint as in the crayon! But then I suggested melted crayons, and voila... peanutsmom!

Goog news, you are not crazy... at least not about the general crayola smell that is. The blue crayola thing, how can I put it? (lol)

If you search the web you will find a lot of info on this. Apparently it is not only present in Beetles but Jettas too, and the consensus leads to a sound deadening that VW uses or have used in different models under the carpet. I have not smelled that in my vert yet, but I have only owned her for a couple of winter months and most ppl complain of this smell in hot days. Also some ppl say their VW do not have that smell while others describe it as "burnt crayons" You can read about it here, here and here or if you have the time just click "crayola smell in VW and you will spend hrs reading about it

In case anyone is curious on where the smell comes from it is actually from the sound deadening insulation in the car. In the summer it gets hot and softens and emits that smell when it softens. It also happens in the Jettas and Golfs because they have the same insulation. However, the Passats have something different so they do not have that smell. If I leave the windows down in the summer, you can smell my car from about 10 feet away. I've heard that people who live in very warm climates have sometimes reported that the smell is almost unbearably strong.
