Those are total production numbers from the Puebla, Mexico plant.
The numbers represent all units regardless of where they were distributed. Hence, that's everything produced for the globe.
Since production numbers are sequential, there is no separate VIN sequence for left hand or right hand drives.
I suppose if you were able to somehow get the statistical records from the plant, you would be able to sort out the distribution but that's not readily available or likely.

And.. a little over 1.2 million units as opposed to the air-cooled Beetle's 21.5 million number is exactly why I believe the NBs of 98-10 will be very collectable among the VW crowds some day.

I agree on the collectability, but it will take a while, IMO the character that makes the NB special is the dome roof (and subsequent huge dash). While some won't miss it in the 2012, it's what makes the NB a NB, it's a crazy idea then and probably wont be repeated anytime soon.

When i broke my first New Beetle. I had to look around for another ride. Everything i looked at, had no style, no Happy looks or anything as quirky as the New Beetle. I'm not a fan of the shape change Bug's, so i opted for another Original New Beetle. Now my girlfriend is looking for one too
In the future i can see owning my 3rd after this one i have. Even when i get the 'Beetle' i think i'll always have the first New Beetle shape Bug in my drive way, even if it's just for occasional use. I Love them

To be onest, I feel very disappaointed to see VW ceased to make
New Beetle instead totally redesigned 2012 Beetle which I don't think can stir the same passion as New Beetle.

I realize that VW totally redesigned Beetle for the sake of business. In other words, making as big profit as they can since the selling record did not sound satisfactory. But I think there is lots of room for them to do to approve the sale
such as personalizing NB, offering more options for different colors,approving drivetrain, etc based on this platform of New Beetle without changing its styling that much.

Unfortunately, we are not the executives of VW

I personally love the styling of both the 98-10 models and the 12+, but your sentiments appear to be right on the money with public opinion. The 2012 is clearly not as popular as the previous NBs of 98-10. If it was, we'd be seeing much better sales numbers. The 2012 has been out since October and VW sold about 1400 in January. Of the pitifully few who have bought the newest Beetle, almost everyone wants the more expensive Turbo models, and the 2.5s are sitting on lots unsold. For starters, I thought it would be the other way around. And sadly, no matter how you slice it, an all-new model should be selling a hell of a lot more than 1400 units in a month. Look at the 2012 Passat and Jetta as an example. I realize that 4-door sedans are any car company's bread-and-butter models, but at least 4000 2012 Beetles should be moving off lots each month, regardless of trim! I fear that the water-cooled Beetle community could vanish to practically nothing within a few short years. I love this group of people, but if too few embrace the latest Bugs, water-cooled Beetle people will be about as scarce as Packard or Edsel enthusiasts by 2020....

The production numbers are way down too due to issues with the sunroof and gauge pod. I wouldn't say sales are down and people don't like the car. I've seen quite a few on the road. Low numbers are more of a factor of the low production numbers.

I'm reserving judgement. They are rolling out the TDI this year, which I think will help sales, and the 'vert soon as well. They have more to do to expand the line (its the 2.5 and 2.0T only right now).

I've only seen one on the road since October when they came out. I know there are issues with the sunroofs, but I would have thought 80-90% of 2012 Beetle buyers would go for the Base models. Also, if the 1401 Beetles sold in January include all of the sunroofs that are on backorder, then this is a pathetic number. On the other hand, if the backordered sunroofs have NOT been counted as sales yet, then I stand corrected.

The question that keeps running through my mind is this: The NB averaged about 30-35K sales a year during its production run from 98-10. The 2012 is on a pace to sell about 15-20K so far. Supposing this latest Beetle only manages to sell 1/2 to 2/3 of what the NB did during its run, will VW keep it or kill it again in a few years? The original air-cooled Beetle was dropped because sales eventually dropped about 60%.

I wish I could find 2006 TDI production numbers. The maintenance guys at my dealership have said several times that there aren't many like mine out there.

I have seen a lot on the roads here in the Chicago area. Both Turbos and Base cars. The turbos hit the roads first because those are the ones that hit the states first (Launch Editions). Now I am seeing a lot more base models on the road. I would say I see at least 1 2012 a week. I think that pretty much all new car sales numbers have dropped. Noone has the money anymore to dish out on new cars every 5-6 years and the consumers are holding onto their cars much longer. Just my $.02.
