Default I test drove a 2012!!!

Ok so yesterday I was called into work to get some over time and I was bummed because I was planning on going to take a look at this 2010 Jetta TDi Cup Edition. But I got off work around one o'clock so this all still got to happen. So I got of work and went straight to the dealership. I parked my car in the back and made a bee line to the Jetta which I have been eye balling for a week. The sales man noticed, we exchanged greetings and got to talking about the car. 2010 Jetta TDi Cup Edition, around 140hp, GTI seats(love), and great styling. I convinced the sales man to let me test drive it. Filled out a waver and scaned my drivers license and got in the car. Now I am used to my Nissan Sentra SE-R SpecV with a stage 2 clutch. So I got in and started up the car. I was surprised with the clutch when I realized they didn't improve the clutch feel at all for the Cup Edition(demerit) I felt I was stomping on the fire wall every time I went to shift gears. But I tried to keep an open mind. The gear changes felt very solid(plus) I got on the freeway entrance and gunned it felt slow(diesel, thats to be expected but I expected the Cup to have more umpf) but got up to speed and a reasonable pace. Got back to the dealership and swapped idle chitchat and your standard questions of when I plan on buying a new car (not any time soon I would rather save my money for my project car) I then relized how much they wanted for it... $28,900! with 30k miles on it!!! I said "yeah its a cool car" to the sales man and was on my way. I mean 30grand for a Jetta TDi that feels like a regular Jetta with GTI seats and a body kit thats crazy!

Now on the way home from my work I saw a car hauler with a bunch of the brand new New Beetles, so I told myself I was going to stop at the VW/Audi/Porche dealer and see if they got any in and I found a sales man and asked if the had any. The guy said yeah we just got two in this morning and escorted me to them. They had one base model baby blue, and a white Turbo.(They were literally just delivered, they still had the protective wraps and plastic seat covers and everything) I asked if we could test drive the Turbo and he was like hell yeah and tossed me the key. I thought it was weird that he didn't ask for a license or anything like that but I didn't question it. Hopped in and started the beast up. First impression; it felt as though VW was trying to step it up against the Mini's and the Fiats. And they defiantly have. Every thing was quality and solid and bold. It felt more like an Audi. Now the one I was test driving was an automatic but you can get it in stick. What I found that was interesting about the manual was they had an "S"(sport) gear this quickened up the gear changes which I thought was nifty but I couldn't tell the difference between that and "D"(drive) while under extreme acceleration. Now the Turbo has around 170hp which is the same as my Sentra. But this was a lot faster than my Sentra.(not surprising for a brand new German car compared to my '04 Japanese car. On a back road I got up to 65mph in nothing flat. It was a solid puller. One thing I thought was kinda gimmicky was the glowing rings around the speakers and you can choose the colors it glows(white, blue, red) Now I really don't like this because that is straight trying to compete with the Kia Soul, which I don't think VW should even bother with. I loved this car and would highly recommend and consider myself getting one. I loved the elongated and widened stance and the chopped roof line. The wheels were a little big and the wheel arch gap looked even bigger but that's changeable. This was a very solid car and a blast to drive! If you are considering one test drive one and you will be sold! We got back to the dealership(Roger Jobs Volkswagen) and we chatted about the car some more and I figured out why he didn't really bother with legality stuff he was Roger Jobs Jr.! So that was kinda cool and I got to literally be the first to drive a 2012 in Bellingham WA

Sincerly,
Zack

PS: The sticker price was around 25grand. By my comparison you are buying a lot more car for the cost compared to the Jetta.

Zack...

What's up buddy?!?!? It's been a hot minute since we've chatted. Hope all is good mang

Great experience you've had with the 12Beetle

I too love the 12Beetle- haven't test driven one yet- plan on it within the week. Well, Val will be actually- this might be her next car.

The auto trans (DSG) is getting rave reviews everywhere. It's a enormous change from the AutoTragic 01M transmissions of the early editions of the nB. And yes, from what I see so far, the car looks pretty solid. I love the engine compartment- it actually looks like you can work underneath the hood this time... a plus for us DIY beetle people.

The 12Beetle is pretty much a Golf/GTI in beetle clothes. It just depends on which clothes you want to wear. Sure, there's characteristics that separate the two apart, but for the most part you're getting the same mechanics. Being i'm partial to the beetle, i'd opt for the beetle.

Yeah, the lit speakers speak Kia Soul, but still it's a nice touch. Gotta remember that VW is trying to get a little deeper into the male demographic, and even hoping to get non VW owners into one. I think they've got a hit on their hands mang.

Also, i'd give it a year, and you'll see the price go down a bit. I'm thinking the 12Beetle is pretty much like the 98 nB when they first came out- slightly inflated sticker...big buzz, big demand and bigger sticker to match. Even so, with the improvements to fit and finish, and amenities, the slightly higher price, albeit will go down, is proportional to the better vehicle in which you're gonna buy.

What you've test driven was a blast. But mang, there's more coming up the pike for the 12Beetle. Check this out- the BeetleR concept...

Lots of good stuff coming mang.

And don't be a stranger Zack. It's good seeing an ol school orger still around

My man, that's the only downfall, and gripe that we have about the BeetleR- no 4WD available. Still, I think this baby will cook the pavement pretty good
