Bree's bug TOTALLY smells like a crayon, I point it out every time I get near her. Jim's smells like fake grapes, and mine smelled like leather.

I wonder if its the protectant they put on cloth seats to keep them from fraying/getting all nastyfied.

Have you ever smelled it in a leather beetle? And Jims interior is perfect. The cloth is still crisp. Maybe the crayon smell turns into grape smell? Or maybe the guy reupholstered the seats. Or maybe Beetle people just like crayons and melt them inadvertantly in the back seats...

i think its from the rubberized coating on everything?

mine smells like crayons, too. initially, it really bothered me 'cause i didn't know what it was, now i don't care. i don't even notice it anymore, but other people do! sometimes people will tell me i smell like my car right when i get out of it. in the summer, the smell is more intense.

There's no apostrophe before an 's' when you're talking about the plural version of a word. "I took some neat photo's!" is NOT correct.

I think its something the factory puts in the cabin filter to give it that new crayon smell.

Anna are you on .org talking about me and my car! LOL, I don't really think it seems like crayons that much... but maybe its because when I was 6, I let my crayola crayons melt in the back window of my mothers month old 1987 xj6 Jaguar. I thought my life was over... the rest of the year we drove around smelling like crayon and the beautiful swirl stains the crayons left in the back window didn't go over well when we went to trade it in for at 1988 xj6.

Sigh, "BB" is my first cloth seated car, so maybe Anna is right, Im used to the smell of Jetta leather.

Thanks for the link to the past thread Marvin, but I might remain in denial and keep spraying "new car smell"

I like the way my car smells. And Anna I guess thinks it smells like Crayons.

I have never been bothered by it.

(I guess I could compare this to my cat: if I was allergic to my cat, I would still keep her.. same here with BB, I love her too much and she isnt causing me any health issues... so I guess we are stuck together!)

I can't say I ever remember the crayon smell in Aphid or our Jetta with cloth seats, but I do recall it in some Bugs I saw on DHVW's used car lot that had perforated leather seats.

There was a guy on the old org, JATS, who named his Bug Crayola because the crayon smell was quite prominent. Props to Antoine for digging up the previous thread.

when i were a lad, we put crayolas in the mittens of the kids we didn't like. these mittens were left on the steam radiators after recess to dry, and the crayons would melt wax all over the insides of their mittens.

LOL, i know that's so grade 3, but then it was!

I picked up my bug last week, from my paint guy and it stank like noxious paint, I don't know if it was paint thinner or what, but it was bad.

Now it smells like pine as I went to wally world and picked up those blue and green air freshner trees.

Default Stupid Crayon

This is my 2nd bug, the first died after 3 weeks in a head on accident. Anyway, I got another one the same year (2001) and it smells like a crayon.I am *so* happy I'm not the only one. I CANNOT STAND IT! I smell like it when I get out of my car, its like bar smell...doesn't go away. I've called VW over this numerous times and they always repsond with "what are you talking about?" My husband called this week and they said, "oh yeah, its due to the insulation they put under the carpet. call VW service center and see if they'll replace it." I thought to myself, sweet! there is light at the end of the endless 'i like to screw my customers' tunnel. So we call VW service, who in turn calls the guy we spoke to and he tells her that its really something else (which apparently is more expensive to replace) so they denied the claim and will not pay to have this horrendous lack of quality. Anyone else want to call and complain, maybe we can annoy them enough to fix it!
