Default Rear Lid malfunction

I have read how to get the fuel door open if it fails the normal way but how would one get the rear lid open if it fails?
I was looking at the latch and it appears that it would be really easy to break if a person was in an aggravated mood due to this situation. On the 2002 there doesn't appear to be a keyed lock in the back.

i'm not 100% sure on this, but if you can get into the trunk from the backseat, you should be able to get the cover off, there are 2 phillips screws inside the handle parts, and it should sorta slide up/snap off. be sure to not break any tabs while doing so.

Once your in, yoe should be able to move the linkage and open the hatch.

As to why it faled, i have o clue.

Default Rear Lid Malfunction

I have not had a rear lid failure, I just wanted to have an idea of what has to be done short of calling it a two door fast back. Electrical things have a tendency to go astray every once in a while.

I know on my 06 there is a small round plastic plug in the left side grab handle with the NB logo on it. You pop that off and it is attached to a cord which you pull and it opens the hatch..

I KNEW they'd put something like that in eventually.

I have a 2002(half year, which it sounds like you have too!!) and there is no such escape rope for us. The removal of the plastic and the manual operation of the latching mechanism is indeed the only way to open it; but once you remove the cover you can rig up a string to "easily open" it from the inside.
