Default Wow...I got a wave today!!!

I babysat two kids today all day ages almost 9 and 2. Their dad owns 'my' dealership. We were on our way to the mall in Daisy when an older(80's?)Audi started to pass us. He flashed his fogs and waved. I was so shocked I could barely manage a wave and some kind of smile. He probably thought, "There goes another dub driver that doesn't care about her car".

Then we got to the mall and there was a 73 orange Super Beetle and we had to park next to that of course. The kids like to see who can spot Bugs first. Whoever sees it yells Hi Ho Herbie yellow!(or whatever color).

Anyway, that was only my second wave initiated by someone else so I had to tell ya. YAY!

I love when I get waves or honks from fellow bug drivers
My favorite time was when I was living in Dallas, TX. I was driving on 183 towards Arlington and a guy was driving next to me in a Harvest Moon Beige NBC and gave me the peace sign as he passed!! It was cool... made my day!
Hey, so if you were that guy... let me know!!

Cool

I always wave. Most people look startled, though. They react like, "Do I know you?". The coolest was when I caught up to this yellow NB on the highway that this nice older lady (in her late 50s or early 60s) was driving. I waved and smiled, and SHE gave me the peace sign. Go Grandma! Grandmas rock.

There does seem to be a "VW fellowship". I've had lots of encounters. Some of the more memorable ones:

When I had my Cabrio I was out on the town with my friends and this souped-up Jetta (VW decals and all) drove by us in a parking lot. They flashed their headlights and honked. We kept seeing them all night and they honked every time.

I was paying for a parking garage ticket and the guy in the booth was reading a book, not really paying attention. Then he noticed my Cabrio. He got all excited and had all of these questions, then pointed out his Golf GTI to me. He was a real VW fan, very cute.

Ever notice how other VW's are parked around you when you get out of a store? I came out one day to 4 Beetles in a row. Wish I'd remembered my camera.

I get honked/waved/whoo-hoooed at every time I'm on the interstate. Even when the top is up sometimes!(Cabrio and NBC)

I really love the interaction. I'm probably biased, but it doesn't seem like other car brands have the same kind of family feeling.

Way cool! I peace-sign any car I am fond of. From the New Beetle, GTI, Passat, Vanagon, to the WRX, MINI Cooper and any convertible car that's "converting". Perhaps your er has a New Beetle too!

I dont ever get any waves or honks from anyone who isnt trying to run me off the road. But I have noticd the community bugs have. I see a bug next to mine everytime I get off work for lunch. And when I go out of town it seems like we congregate together. I love it and continue the tradition by fillling in the gaps between bugs parked together. It is a really awesome feeling you get with no other car in the world.

One time when I picked up my car after an oil change, my mom and I were driving out of the parking lot, and some people were looking at a CPO NB. I stopped and rolled down the window and told her I love mine and the girl told me she liked Daisy's color. That was cool. Seems like Beetles or VWs in general don't park next to me very often. Oh well. My mom got to talking with a mom and her 2 kids with a silver 2000 today at the gas station. They just bought it and were very excited. My mom calls me and says "What's the name of your beetle web site?" So I told her the org name and she passed it on.

The last trip to so cal. I had finally made it to the 10 fwy.

I see a red NB up ahead so I caught up to him, and passed him (slowly) and waved as I went by. ............. NOTHING!!!!!

So I make it to the off-ramp, and here he is behind me about 4 lengths. So I intentionally went slow so he could go by. he never did. Then pulling into the drive way, he passes me and gives a smile and a little nod. So I guess that evened everything out.

In '03 when I got my first nb I saw a BEATUIFUL black, very moded, nb turning onto the street I was on and they flashed their lights and honked. It made me feel sooooo great I couldn't believe it! Ever since then I wave or honk. Sometimes people wave back and sometimes they look at me like I am crazy. Sometimes some of them look at me funny but you can see they get it, like they know next time they should wave or honk.
It is like my car being new every time!

You know, sometimes the wave you give is the first wave that they've received. This is exactly how this unique greeting started just a few short decades ago (It wasn't in the owner's manual). It could become contagious in your neighborhood but you'll probably need to keep "refreshing" that gesture until others start mimicking you. Keep it up. Someone has to lead...
