Default Newbeetle yellow TDi in Aus!

Hi, I have been looking at this website for about a month now, and 3 weeks ago I picked up my little yellow newbeetle TDi. I love her, but have not settled on a name yet, although I was thinking Daisy (until I saw Daisy's dad post his photo's, and now I'm not sure.... anyone got suggestions?) Will get around to posting pics - been too busy driving around!

Welcome to the .org!

I'm normally in Melbourne. If you like to go on cruises, etc, there's a very active VW club in our state. Coming up is the day of the Volkswagen in November, which is a very easy way to check out the scene.

You should also check out my forum (http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com) but be warned it's mostly air cooled, and I think you'll find more NB owners here, for sure!

Hi Nic -

Normally, our cars will take on a personality and name themselves. Daisy is a very appropriate name for your car...no reason at all to think there can only be one Daisy in the world. You might even want to get her a special set of wheels http://tinyurl.com/naskc ....which my wife would have done to my Daisy if she didn't find Kermit first!

I know - I have been very slack! Raining all this week, so when the sun comes out again, I'll get off my arse and post some! It's a shame there is not too many Aussies on this website - it would be great to get some local feedback!

My biggest advice for a fellow aussie is don't crash your beautiful new little bug, it took 8 months for mine to be fixed because getting parts was a nightmare and the car was so difficult for the repairer to work on.

Another bit of advice is get your mods from overseas companies or ebay as there isn't much of anything for new bug's here! There is (or was years ago) a company in Victoria that had a small range of body kits but I can't remember what they were called.

Repco can get in some body parts including bonnets relatively cheap, they can also get in clutches, rotors, filters etc.

Oh and I got my car bra custom made through a Holden dealer, doesn't fit as nice as the other ones I have seen on the org but it does the job. If your interested in one I can dig up the name of the company for you, I think it was around $300. You can get them in yellow too

Last bit of advice is to invest in electronic shoo roos to protect your new baby (repco have those too)

Congratulations on your yellow TDI!! Daisy is a good name for a beetle, whatever the color. Do you have Biodiesel in Australia?

Excuse my ignorance, but what are shoo roos?

They theoretically (and I mean theoretically) shoo away kangaroos. Which may be useful to you if you travel through infested parts at dusk or dawn when they're active. However, if you're like me and haven't seen a roo since 2001 or 2002, then don't worry.

They don't work, a user's perspective:

Car bras can damage the paint through ill fitting / wet / left on. Check out some of the threads here before committing to one. Personally, I take care of any paint chips with touch up when I get them, and get them fixed properly before trading it in on the next car. It's cheaper, far far easier, and less ugly than car bras. The only chip I ever got in my two years of New Beetle ownership was right under the right windscreen wiper blade - and a bra wouldn't have helped as none reach that high.

If you're still into car bras after all this - 3M have a clear bra film, which is just as effective as the ugly black bras, but is invisible to the eye. Until the paint discolors at a different rate than the uncovered paint. You will need to import it from the USA.

They are little devices, either plastic or electronic that shoo roos away from your car (or so the manufacturers claim). You can hide them under the wheel arch so no one will notice them. Chances are if you don't know what they are you wont need any

It depends how bad the kangaroos are in your area. I usually pass at least 10 on my way home from work and I have never hit one. One of our vehicles doesn't have shoo roos and we've hit heaps. I don't know if they work but until I hit one in my bug I'll keep them on my car just in case!

Again with the car bra if you use country roads that pepper your car with rocks invest in one but if you don't then you won't need one. As Hoonbug said you have to take great care with a car bra, you have to ensure their there is no dirt or moisture underneath it or leave it on for extended periods of time or it will hurt your paint.

The colour ones rock, check them out at http://www.carbra.com.au/. These ones have little deflectors to prevent rocks hitting your windscreen too

Not much chance of roos here - we are in suburbia! See the occasional dead one near the golf course - but none apart from that. We only drive our bug in the Melbourne area (well, have done up till now). My bug is one that likes to frequent shopping centres and drive along the coast! Thanks for the advice though, very much appreciated!
