Default 99 VW bug totaled

Well, My son totaled my wifes bug last friday night. He only received 3 stiches and a black eye. The air bags and seat belts worked perfectly.(very safe car) The ? that I need to know is, from the date of purchase of the 99 bug it consumed a little oil in between oil changes. Do the new ones consume oil also? It wasnt burning the oil through the pistons just consuming it. We would like to have another bug with the help of your research. Thanks Jumm

I am sooooo glad you guys are okay!!!

I had my mk3 jetta totalled in january, and boy is it scary to have your airbags deploy. But I was kept extremely safe. Thats why I am in a new beetle now.

On the oil issue... Ive never had that (my beetle has 67,xxx miles on her now), but heard a few others have. I dont know about the new 2.5l engine.

I am glad your family is okay!!! Thank goodness!!!

I am glad your family is ok. I had a 2003 NB and never used a drop of oil between changes 80k miles. I now have a 2006 2.5 and well its still too soon to tell.....

Cool

I've had my '99 since day one. Had the missing oil issue over a period of time. When the VW service manager told me that switching to synthetic oil would take care of that issue. Cynically, I switched to Mobil 1 and haven't had the oil usage issue since.

Just weird...

My 99 with 78,000 miles on it hardly uses any oil either....MAYBE 1 quart in between oil changes, if that, using regular oil.

My old '98 2.0L NB was beginning to use about a quart of dino oil between a 3K change right before I sold it just under 90K. My wife's '01 Jetta 2.0 drinks oil, but not at a rate where we can get the top end redone by VW yet. My 1.8T on the otherhand uses a barely perceptible amount on a 5K change of Mobil 1. I haven't heard on the 2.5L. The TDIs are oil-tight from what I've heard. Remember that the powertrain warranty is cut in half after the first owner on the '01 and earlier models--so if you are concerned you need to be well under 50K so you can document oil usage and get a warranty repair there... Hope that helps.

BTW: Did it have a grey or black interior? I need a passenger seatbelt buckle assembly!

Sorry to hear that your NB was totalled, on the other hand though, it's comforting to hear that your son made it out with just minor injuries.

I have a '98 (222,000+ miles ) and a 2K Turbo (120,000+ miles) NB; I have always used Mobil 1 (with a Mobil 1 oil filter) in both and I have not had a single oil consumption issue.

just because we are talking oil....

My 1998 vr6 glx jetta never had an oil issue and I had it from 3 miles to 96,167 miles and my 2001 2.0 beetle has yet to have an issue... but since Im an org member I do check it myself every other fill up to make sure... still so issues.

Hope that helps.

In 8+ years of VW ownership, only issue with the jetta was the windows regulators/clips and on this NB, so far just the Brake Light Sensor which is going to be recalled in december.

In the eight years that I have owned my 98 NB, only the passenger side window has had the regulator/clips issue, twice in fact.
