Unhappy New Owner with headaches... lol

Good Morning and Thanks for accepting me to this site!

I bought a 2000 VW New Beetle 2 months ago and I noticed that the dash boards lights aren't coming on. It was a no big deal since I drive during the day and not at night, but now I'm in need of the dash lights and I can't figure out whats wrong!
During the day the lights on the shifter are on with no issue, but as soon as I turn on the headlights, I loose the lights to the shifter and I still dont have lights on the dashboard.
Here are some of the things that I knew to do to see if I could fix it on my own.

Replace Light Switch - That didn't work
Checked Fuses - All fuses are fine

I have not replaced the dimmer switch as of yet, but I'm going to buy a used one at the junkyard today to see if that will do it.
Running out of ideas and reaching the end of my expertise.

PLEASE HELP!!!
