Default Who generally pays the sales tax?

Question:
Who generally picks up the sales tax in private party car purchase?
This could be a deal breaker...

In Texas, it's the responsibility of the purchaser. But that doesn't mean you can't work out a deal with the seller for all or part of it, and keep it separate from the actual purchase price (i.e. - cash in hand).

I know what you are saying about being excited about your car, I was too and I overlooked somethings, but I went back and I had a great Salesperson who took care of it them!

In NC, you don't pay a sales tax on private vehicle purchases. Regardless of where you got it you DO pay a highway tax ($80/98 209k .... $150-something/2002 100k).

In TN and KY you pay the sales tax when you register the car to get your tags.

To determine sales tax; TN and KY use the NADA Value with a mileage consideration (for those over 100K), regardless of what the sale price is on the back of the title.

In Calif, you pay the sales tax, along with a $20 transfer fee at the DMV when you register the car in your name on private party purchases. If the annual registration is due, you would have to pay that as well, but once the seller has paid it, it is good for the rest of the year.

Yes, every time a vehicle (car, boat motorcycle etc.) changes hands, the state collects sales tax. This is why so many people lie about the selling price on their "bill of Sale" that they forward to the DMV. Vehicles are one thing that gets taxed over and over and over again... Ridiculous...
