Love the new/used Beetle I purchased. Came with only a radio/casset tape player. I bought an Alpine MP3 unit with Ipod connector. The problem is this: The new Alpine keeps hitting something in the rear of the housing. I have moved wires around and the like, and this has helped. Still unable to lock the new deck into the DIN sleeve. Was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem and what they did to fix it?

it's alot easier to fit in if you take the whole center peice out and mount the radio to that dash peice while it's off the dash. It will give oyu alot more room to fish the wiring around. At least it was alot easier for me.
All you need is a T20 torx screwdriver. If you dont have one, i suggest buying one anyway, you will find t20's all over the place in this car.

I agree with Toad, I ended up removing the 8 screws, pulling the whole center out, installing the radio part way and then reinstalling the center unit because to pull and push the wires down behind the blower unit. The diagram is attached.
The other thing to do is to looses the lower dash parts below the radio and pull the wires down. Sorry I didn’t take photos this past weekend when I installed my radio. There is a bracket in the back used to stabilize the radio. --terry

It took a couple of days to get back to this do to a nasty case of the flu. After reading your suggestions and doing some measurements, I discovered that the Alpine unit was about 1/2 inch longer than the stock radio. So I did remove the center console and cut out the stock radio rear support bracket. Put it all back together and the Alpine unit slipped right in!!!
It was just a case of a slighty longer radio and the rear bracket wasn't allowing it to slide in far enough to lock into place. Thanks for all your help. |
