Hi Everyone,
I'm just about to purchase a yellow '98 NB TDi this coming week. I'm fairly excited about it. It's a manual (with about 130K miles on it), and it's exceedingly fun to drive!
Any gotchas that I should be looking out for? The timing belt was replaced about 60K miles ago, I think.
The cupholders do look fairly useless (and apparently, that opinion seems to be shared widely). Are there some sort of thingies that one could put in the cupholders to convert them to storage bins or some such? Also, I notice the dash slopes downwards, so there's no real storage up there either, even though the real estate has sweeping vistas and enviable acreage. I have been looking at the
The BugDash stuff which looks fairly interesting.
Also, the car's rear driver's side fender has a bit of boo-boo on it and is currently covered by some sort of hard clear plastic (to prevent rust I suppose). Is that sort of thing expensive to replace?
Two more things are "wrong" with the car: the trunk release latch behind the logo on the trunk is broken, and the power window controls on the driver's door: that instrument panel is kinda dangly: it doesn't seem to stay in the door panel.
I've IM'd Niki on this forum, and she's been very very helpful so far (I had questions about adding a center console): so thanks Niki!
I shall definitely post pictures as soon as I get them.
Oh yeah, what got me here: I am formerly a proud owner of a black '92 Subaru SVX that got totaled about 3 weekends ago. It was parked on the side of the street near my house when some lady crashed into the back of it. No idea why she was swerving, but there you go. Anyway, she was on the up and up and did call the cops to the scene, so I found out about it because a policeman was outside my door at 7:45 in the morning. Pretty harsh news to get one out of bed, I must say. So with great sadness I had to let her go. However, I'd been thinking about a TDi for quite a while, and Beetles are what I came up with (for the price and features), and so here I am.
Sorry to talk your ears off, I could've just blogged about this, eh?
Looking forward to sharing stories,
Seemant
