Default Hi from SW Colorado

Hi All, Finally getting up the nerve to post as I'm usually a lurker everywhere I go I'm a longtime VW Beetle fan and in my life I've had a 55 and a 66 Beetle and a 70's Rabbit. I am now looking very dilligently for a Beetle TDI as I live very far out of town and my Ford Explorer is just not practical anymore. So basically I'm asking for any and all advice for my search. I'm doing the usual AutoTrader, Carmax, Cars.com type of thing and sometimes I email and then I get the salesmen "jumping on me" thinking I'm looking for a NEW Beetle, wanting me to CALL, etc. (even tho I've listed my criteria) I am extremely hearing impaired and computers/fax are my primary communication since phones and I don't do well together. I am looking for: silver/black/or white, TDI, manual and only have about 11,000 to spend. I am willing to travel up to about 800 miles possibly. It will be my boyfriend and me on a motorcycle to get there. Will I only be able to acquire a 1998 to 2000 at that price? I wanted to get as late a model as possible for the money but the only ones I see will have over 100,000 miles on them. I know diesel engines are ok with higher miles or am I incorrect on that? I am researching as much as possible with my time but still feel a bit uncomfortable about facts I DO know. As I said any and all info would be so helpful. I can't wait to have my own and be able to officially join the league here!

Welcome to the Org!

A TDI sounds perfect for you. Best of luck finding one at that price, as they are in very high demand at this time. But, I just know there is one out there for you.

Please don't be a stranger here at the Org. We welcome owners, *and*, simple fans, of the New Beetle.

A sincere thanks to everyone that welcomed me. Not Gunnison gadgetvise, I'm near Durango. In 2004 and 2006 I was in a study for a certain cochlear implant and I used to make the long haul, sometimes monthly, from here to Denver of course coming thru CO Springs. (loved Wolf Creek Pass in the winter I tell ya) I was actually impressed both by Denver and The Springs A TDI sure would have come in handy then. I moved here from Atlanta to be near my brother, so both the elevation and the length of the winters are still taking some getting used to I'm not used to snow in May! So sorry you're bugless. I have wanted one since they came out in the late 90's but when time came for a newer vehicle I thought nah...gotta have a truck in Colorado.

I'm hoping within the next couple of years to move down in elevation a bit and that was something I was wondering as well. Will an 8000 foot elevation hinder the TDI? I am really not worried about snow driving since I see plenty of Honda Civics and other smaller sedans driving it...they are really very good about keeping the roads plowed and then it's just really slow/smart driving.

Thanks again for the welcome and I'll keep reading and looking. I know there's one out there for me too, I just have to find her.

Durango is a fun place to visit and home of Adam State College.

About Turbo Diesel; altitude has no effect on the car but may affect you. The winters may affect heating the car, though my friends with the Dodge with Cummins Diesel seem to do OK. Do you have a block warmer? It helps get your cabin warm.

Did you bring the car with you when you moved or did you get it local?

In 1988, we pulled our camping trailer to durango and took the Durango-Silverton RR. It went through the campground we stayed at.

Anyways; welcome.

Welcome to the org from Fort Collins! I bought Daisy new in November 2004 and she's been a blast to drive. She has 36,000 miles and the last tank she got 43 MPG. European Motor Cars here in Fort Collins tends to have TDIs. I have met one of the owners and he seems very respectable. Their cars show up on AutoTrader. Good luck in your search for a TDI. If you come up here for one, let me know!
