Default Don't know where to go: Fuel economy lowered to only 18mpg!! (x.x")

I have a 2000 New Beetles, and recently I started noticing that the fuel economy of my baby has lowered to just making 18mpg!!! This is heart breaking... Could anyone tell me what might have caused it and what can I do to recover? Thank you~

Im having a similar problem. Mine actually fluctuates 18 and 21. I'll take any advice to up my MPG.

run a bottle of injector cleaner or octane booster, clean your air filter and check and change plugs and wires. those are normal causes of a drop in fuel economy and are easy things to fix. if you've never changed your plugs in a 2000 beetle then you should definately see your mpg go up when you do.

Also scan your car for codes. 02 sensors going bad can drastically drop your gas mileage. Happened on my car.

I bought the injector cleaner, but I had just filled up a full tank so I am going to run it empty and then dump in the cleaner. I will let everyone know if it worked for me. Thanks again.

Mine has done the same thing twice... first time was the MAF, second time was the front O2 sensor.

There should be a check engine light on...

The engine light came on in Jan this year and the diagnostic told me to change spark plugs and the MAF, and it was taken care of then. However, although I didn't drive much this year because I have been travelling, but I have been noticing a continous decline of my baby's fuel economy. Oh... (v.v)q
