Default Steering Wheel

Hello,

I wanted to see if anyone is having a problem with their steering wheel locking up. I have only had my car a month, but I have had several episodes of when I first get in my car in the morning that it wouldn't start because my steering wheel was locked up. I called the dealership and they assured me that there is nothing wrong with the car and that this happens sometimes. I have to turn my steering wheel back and forth several times and it will eventually start. Has anyone experienced this?

yep, my hubby says its because when i park the wheels are not straight so when i shut her off the steering wheel is locked to either side.... i had one time where i struggled for a couple of minutes in panic !!!!

now i make sure the wheels are stright when i park and also that the wheel has some side to side play before i shut it off ...
so far so good no more panic attacks

this use to happen to my jeep too....

Thanks for the email. I am glad to know that I'm not the only one this has happened to. I will start watching to make sure I have my tires straight. How long have you had your new beetle?

Since February , i really down sized from a tahoe to the buglet .... i love it, i wanted one for a long time and finally got fed up with the price of filling up the "ho" so i found this one on line, low miles, everything i wanted ( color and all) so i figured it was a sign from GOD ( ha ha , i know she has better things to do than find me a bug but i would like to think it was devine intervention)

this place is awesome, everyone is very helpful and freindly

Mine does the same thing. I asked the service techs when I took Greta in to get her iPod jack fixed, and they said it's normal...even took me to the lot to see that the other NBs did it, too.

This is an anti-theft device. Just gotta do the wiggle with the steering wheel while the key is in. Also, you'll get a better response if you post in the Questions/Concerns about NB forum.

Mine only locks if I turn the steering wheel AFTER turning the engine off.

Me too. I usually lock the steering wheel if I have to park Daisy outside, just in case!

I love the way almost everyone has a name for their new beetle. I named mine "Bella" and all my friends think I am crazy. I saw that you called yours Greta. That is a cute name.

I down sized from a Trailblazer to my pretty beetle. I thought I would miss the SUV, but I don't at all. I wanted a beetle when I got the SUV. I wish I had got the beetle a lot sooner.

Thanks a lot...I like the name "Bella", too. When I was a child, we had a Siberian Husky named Bella.

Every one of my cars has a name...though none are very original. I currently have Essie the Cadillac Escalade, Ramsey the Dodge Ram, and Mary the Mercury Mariner.

Greta just sort of "fits" my Beetle. She's kown as "Greta the Gecko Green Beetle"

I really need a life!

Those are very cute names. I really like your gecko green beetle. I almost got the gecko green, but I found Bella who is harvest moon beige and she was cheaper. That was really the deciding feature (cheaper.) Ha!

owner's manual - 3.1, page 98, "switch positions - 1 - ignition off/engine off - steering wheel can be locked, -2- If it is difficult to turn the key from position 1 to 2, move the steering wheel until the key turns freely"

"Note - whenever you leave the vehicle unattended, pull out the key, turn the steering wheel to the left or right until it locks...."

Just so you don't think I'm making this up!

That is soooo funny...I went to the dealership to look at the Harvest Moon, but they only had one and it was sold. So, I saw Greta (only one of her, too), took a test drive and drove her home in less than 2 hours.
