My daughter has been asking for a beetle since she was 14. She just turned 17 and is a great kid. She has been driving the granny wagon (2001 passat 1.8T automatic)that was handed down to her from her brother. He now drives my 1998 BMW M3. She just got "Pearl" last Thursday and I have never seen her happier. I hope it will serve her well through college and then she can buy something else. Pearl has 90,000 miles and a 2.0 5 speed manual (she did not want an auto tranny). Tan leather interior and is really a nice car. I am a very accomplished car restorer so there is not much I can't or won't do myself. I am looking forward to educating myself on the maintenance requirements for this car and hope she will have a car she can enjoy for years to come. It appears this forum is the place to be for New beetle information.
Cheers, Ed |

Welcome...
Yes.. the 2.0 is a GREAT choice for your 17 yo daughter! Make sure you get the timing belt and water pump changed every 60,000 or so miles. Did you check to see if they were already changed?

Thanks for the warm welcome. I hope to add some technical knowledge over time. I am aware of the timing belt issues. The Passat was a rescue vehicle that had stripped the belt and bent 12 of the 20 valves in the cyl head. My son had to pull the head and send it to the machine shop to have it refurbished and then reinstall it. He was 15 at the time and I stood over him and gave him guidance and handed him tools. I did get my hands a little dirty at times. I figured if he had some skin in the game he would take care of it and he did. My Daughter is soooo happy with this car she wants to drive just to be driving. Yesterday she went out to just sit in it for a while. She is a pretty cool kid. She is senior in HS and pres. of her honor society and was nominated to homecoming court. She also has a great classic singing voice and has been first or second in many state wide vocal competitions. I know she is driving in her bug singing and rowing through the gears having a blast. Did I mention she is a great kid, but I am a little biased. She and Pearl should be very happy together for a long time.
