Default New Owner of a pretty NBC!

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to VW and new to Beetles. I've been looking on and off for about a year now and finally found one. Attached are a couple of pictures from the dealer, but they are the car!

She's a 2004 Aquarius Blue NBC with only 33K miles! When I went to see her, she was like brand new everywhere. I had seen it on craigslist through a dealer and it was priced too high. Just before Christmas, price came down $3K and so it was in our "high" price range to get a used car.

It was the slushiest, coldest, time of the year to be buying a convertible but it was too good to pass up. Everything was going great until I was washing the car and on the passenger side I sprayed "off" paint! I must of hit a hard snow pack between the front and back wheels under the door and dented it underneath along with cracking the paint! Ohhhh, my heart sank! I have found a car detailer that will fix it all for $225. Have to save for that one.

My second thing happened today. I was sitting in the driveway listening to the radio and going through my manual again. I decided to try and make the top go down and up. It did this fine, BUT those notorious "flaps"? They decided not to go down along with the top. They do when I close the top so I know that it works "sort of". I am going to take it back to the dealer who sold me the car and hopefully they might go 50/50 on repair since I remember seeing it sticking up when the salesman showed me how to do the top, but didn't think of it then. We'll see.

I don't have a name for her yet and would love to get a personalized tag, but Kansas just came out with a new one (lasts 5 yrs) and it's ugly (at least to put it on a blue bug). So I'm sticking with the lt. blue/white tag for now.

Look forward to going through the forums and finding those fun stories and fixes for NBCs.

Talk soon,
Karen

Don't feel bad, you made a great decision getting the Vert. Yes it comes with it ups and down put I think it has more ups then it has down. I to have a Vert and LOVE it!!!!! Mine is a '04 Turbo (Harvest Moon)(Black top). Bought Buddy last March and he only had 6k on him. He was like brand new. Not a blemish on him at all.

My only down was that in the first month the passenger rear quarter window actuator broke. Searched online how tot fix it myself, went to the dealer to buy the part ($80), went home and spent 3 hours fixing it. I was a very labor intensive job, but better then taking it to the dealer for $350,

Have fun with it. They are fun to drive as you should already know.

Mucho congrats to you and welcome to the org!

Beautiful 'vert you have there! I wish I were a wealthy cuss. I'd have a 25 car garage full of New Beetles! And I'd have me an Aquarius blue with blue top (or is it grey?) like yours.

Oh yeah, about the flaps. You can do a search on the org and find out information about them but in a nutshell, those flaps are *very* problematic - so much so that VW just got rid of them beginning with the '06 model year.

The top is grayish, but I'm wondering if it is just faded from black?

She is pretty. I saw my first Beetle convertible back in 1984. It was a 1980 yellow with black roof and I was 20 y/o. Buuuttt, dad wasn't crazy with the idea so I ended up with a new stripped down Nissan Sentra. When the new Beetles came out in 98, I thought - Wow, I want one. But kids and room were needed and finally this past year I was able to even think about getting one. Tried to find a TDI, but all were 150K or more and just couldn't find the right combination of color, vert and mileage.

This blue one came up at the right price and mileage, although it is a gas engine, which currently isn't getting good gas mileage "yet".

I'm glad to have found this forum. I can't wait even more for SUMMER!! I want to ride with the top down!

Nice vert and you will enjoy it so much you won't believe it.

As for the flaps, have you made sure to have waited enough time to let them close down. I noticed with mine to wait a little bit after the light goes off before stopping the switch to avoid that kind of trouble.

A couple of things I found out - like Mister said, you have to hold the switch longer until the flaps "engage" and go back down. Took car to dealer I bought it from (Toyota) and they said "It works now!" figures. But I'm glad it wasn't really broken. Whew!

Neat about the gray top. Matches the gray interior.

I just LOVE driving around in my "new" car. I just can't wait for summer to let the top down! Found the link on Pink Beetles, how much fun.....

Talk later,
Karen

Karen, first off welcome to the ORG! I don't come on here a lot, but when I do it's nice to see new folks that are enjoying our leetle cars.

Regarding your findng a TDI convertible...ain't gonna ever happen unless you live in Europe or maybe Canada. There are NO TDI verts here in our United States of America. If there were, I'd have one myself.

I have a 2007 NBC that I bought brand new. Henry is sleeping now. I give him a bath and vacuum out the interior and then cover him up for the winter. He and I just travel in the warm months. He only has a little over 17K on him.

By the way, those TDIs with 150k on them...they are just getting broken in. My wife has a 2005 passat TDI wagon that I bought new for her and the car has only 175K on it. Timing belt has been changed out twice. Still plenty of power coming from that leetle turbo 4-banger.

Enjoy your NBC come Spring. And Karen...the name for your NBC....it WILL come to you.

Ciao,

Jerry

Talking FINALLY: Out with the top down

Yesterday was the first day I got to enjoy driving with the the top down! I did once about 3 weeks ago, but it was "chilly". Today I'll get to go out with the top down, BUT tomorrow we are expecting 3-6" of SNOW! Can you believe it? Only in Kansas during spring does this happen. I'll take a pic later this morning with the top down. My original pics were from the dealer's place with top up.

I LOVE MY CAR!

Karen, I have to tell you, I think your user name would be a great name for your car! You know, Snuggle Bug or Snuggle Bunny! It is such a pretty combo, the grey and blue. It is such a great feeling when you are finally driving the car you have been searching for! I'm very happy for you

Yay!!!! That's so awesome!! I got my NBC in January and recently had the top down for the first time, too. I don't know about you, but I was amazed at how little I feel 'wind-blown' even WITHOUT the windscreen!
