Default Beetle hood will go down but not up!!!

Hi guys,
I need some help....I have an 03 Beetle Cabriolet and it has been sat on my drive for a while as I have been driving another car.
I came to sell it so went to put hood down to take some photos but the battery died before it made it all the way down!!!
So I did the manual override procedure as per the manual and bought a new battery (which was much needed).
The hood will now go down mechanically perfectlybut wont go back up again unless you do so manually.
Ive taken it in to the local dealership and they reckon it could be the motor but surely it wouldnt go down if it was the motor!! Ive booked it in to be fixed but have got a feeling its going to be rather costly.
Any suggestions as to what it could be or whether I could sort it out myself.

Really appreciate any advice.
Many thanks
Geraldine (UK)

Sounds like the shop is just guessing?

Did they take it back into the shop and diagnose it, or did you just talk to someone about it and that's what they said?

I don't think a motor is going to fix your problem. But the ECM flash might. It'll cost you several hundred less $ and of course, mean much less profit for them.

So you may need to INSIST they try to properly diagnose the problem first.
