That has to be the vaguest question one could ask

Your CEL is on, but not flashing right? To quote any VW service phoneoperator "the car is safe to drive". However, get to a VW tech pronto just to be safe.

And welcome aboard...enjoy the org.

Welcome to the org and bug ownership!

The CEL could be on for any one of about a million different reasons. If the car is new to you and you have no idea of its history, reliability, repair/maintenance/service records, the safest and smartest thing would probably be to take it in for service asap. Hopefully it will me something minor!

Unhappy Trouble Codes P0172 and P1128

I took my Beetle to the local car dealer he did a diagnostics report which showed two trouble codes P0172 (Fuel trim, system too rich, Bank 1) and P1128 (Long term fuel trim mult, system too lean, Bank 1) does anyone have any suggestions on what's wrong

The car dealer thinks that it could be the Oxygen sensor. Please help

I dont get how the system can be running too lean and too rich at the same time. Weird. I'ma thinkin it could be the o2 sensor or MAF, but it also wouldnt hurt to change the fuel and air filters.

Do you think the fuel is too rich and i should be mixing injector fluid with the fuel when ever i go to refuel my beetle?

Injector fluid, if you use it, shoulnt be every fill-up. Chevron reccomends every 3000 miles for thiers.

You are probably aware, the most common why to fault find is by elimination, i.e. Replacing part by part until the fault clears. The Vehicle’s performance is good and I can't smell any fumes the codes were cleared by the car dealer, so am I correct in thinking that having erased the error codes, I would not immediately know which sensor has cured the problem!

Is this a costly way (replacing all suspected bits) the only way? Please help!!

Well, if you had the means, i would just clear the codes and see if they come back.

I'd stop usiing fuel injector cleaner on every fillup, and repace the fuel filter and air filter, just cuz they're probably old and dirty. do you remeber the last time they were changed?

You wanna know what happened yesterday?

I heards a weird sound when sitting at the taco-bell drive-thru, and the parinoid person i was, i thought it was my engine. So i turned the car off, and the noise wasnt coming from me. SO i turned the engine back on, and the CEL came on.

Switched my trust Scangauge to san mode and got code 0172. Fuel trim, bank1, system too rich. hehe. I told the scangause ot clear the codes, and bam cel went off.

Deove around the rest of the day, and drove some today, no cel. And you wanna know something really weird? This is the tank of gas that i added Chevron fuel injector cleaner too. Hehe.
