Hello there i am new to the forums. I have a 99 vw beetle 2.0 with a manual transmission. Lately when i put gas into the car it seems to fight me to start; hesitating, chuging, etc. This only occurs when you open up the gas tank and push the metal flap down. Im guessing that flap may he sticking or if there is a sensor in there it maybe causing this issue. Any ideas?

I have never changed the fuel filter, it had 119,000 when I got it a year ago, now it has just below 139,000 however it does not hesitate at any other time. Only when the gas tank is open and the flap is opened. I could be wrong but I would imagine if it were my fuel filter it would do it more often than just when the gas tank were opened. Thanks for your advice though.

Hmm, thanks for that supercharged. I had done some research late last night and I had thought that it might be the EVAP vacuum solenoid just from what I had read. Can anyone tell me what computer system they use to scan vw with? Id prefer not to take it to a dealership or mechanic if I dont have to.

I bought a scan tool from Harbor Freight this past week. I spent about $70 after the 20% coupon I found in a mustang magazine.
The reader found that I needed a new coolant temp sensor and I was able to clear some old codes I had flagged while doing a compression check. It also reads VW specific codes and transmission codes as well. For my needs which is just occasional, the scanner is more than adequate. OBD II / EOBD Code Scanner |

I got it right off the shelf at the local HF. I have heard fantastic things about the VAG-COM scanner which a lot of VW enthusiasts use but it was nearly 3x's as expensive. I just couldnt justify the purchase considering my frequency or rather infrequency of use.

First, the fueling issue. Sounds like you are stirring up sediment and/or water in your tank when you take on fuel, that is then blocking the intake to the fuel pump. Bet if you let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes after you fill up, it won't do it. Water is easy, ad a dryer additive, sediment is a little tougher. These conditions are worsened over the years if you don't keep your tank full. If you only fill up every couple weeks, once you clean-up the problem, and for everyone else, fill up at half tank.
As the the scanner, VW is different; here the source for readers, from inexpensive to expensive - Readers “vChecker” Basic & Pro Home Page > Search > Vagchecker > ES#9951 V-Checker Scanner - Basic - VAGCHECKERBASIC Home Page > Search > V-Checker > ES#9950 V-Checker Scanner - Pro - VAGCHECKERPRO Vag-Com the real enchilada from Ross-Tech http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/interfaces.html I have a link somewhere for the codes, if you need it. I actually called auto zone to find out, my dad had mentioned about them scanning for free. As far as there being sediment etc stirred up in the tank, if that were the case it wouldnt do it when the metal flap is opened where the gas nozzle is inserted. Not just when gas is added. I also put a whole pint of seafoam in it, it did nothing. But I really appreciate the help! I plan on going to get it scanned tomorrow. Ill keep you guys posted!
