New TDI Beetle owner

I just picked up a 2000 Beetle TDI.

I bought it from an auction and it has 177000 miles on it.

I was planning on doing a upgraded 100k timing belt kit, complete fluid changes.

I am trying to find out what common "quirks" are on these rigs. I have plenty of reading to do. I was also wondering about how many miles to expect out of the power plant.

I've been a Dodge guy most my life, but have been looking at a TDI for the fuel mileage benefits.

In a Dodge most of the wiring harnesses are already installed for several options. Are VW's the same in this regard?

I'd like to get power seats, remote entry, and ideally remote start.

I need a new center console lid, need to figure out why my trunk doesn't open from in the car and why the fuel cap does not pop open.

I have a new mirror adjuster on order and still need to check the fuses and breakers before I dig too deep into an electrical issue on the items that are not working.

Are there gauge pods that look good in the beetle? I just feel uncomfortable not having any gauges.

Is there anyway to change the thermometer from Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Last question for now, is there any good sites to get VW parts from at a decent price? I've had issues finding a good site so far.

Welcome to the Beetle family! I'm sure your TDI is happy to have someone to take care of it!

Have you checked out tdiclub.com? There's a list of TDI mechanics by state so you have someone to call if you need an expert. 1stvwparts.com is a good parts site. I've ordered from them a few times and they are really helpful. You will probably want a Bentley manual, get one from Amazon. TDIs like proper, regular maintenance with all the right fluids, filters, etc. Many owners add gauge pods to their bugs, there's pictures on this site.

Congrats on your new TDI. I really wanted to go that route but I was a little afraid of the unknown. I've never driven a diesel before. Hope you have a wonderful time together .

This place is full of great people with lots of knowledge. I believe I will be able to make the TDI jump whenever I need to get another car (but I plan on keeping Iggy until she dies or I do, so that might be a while ).

If you push the hour and minute button at the same time for 3 seconds it will change.

Also, congrats, I wish I had a TDI! Jelly! Dont forget to post pics! We like pics!
