Question 2006 w/ xm?

Hi there, I am brand new to the forum. I am about a week away from purchasing a 2006 TDI Auto Pkg 2 New Beetle. Trouble is that most Pkg 2's are coming with a cd changer &/or xm. The dealer said he would remove the cd changer. My question is, Is the XM built into the head unit? Is it a seperate piece? Any pics available? I've looked all over the web. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Talking xm / cd changer

the xm receiver is an actual seperate piece...the head unit is setup to to work with the factory installed xm unit, it will work with or without the receiver...there will also be an antennae on the dash by the windshield, why do you want them to remove the cd changer ?

The XM is built into the headunit. The antennea is not on the dash, only on convertibles and you are getting a TDI. There should be no reason to remove the cd changer because that is a seperate piece that is actually a dealer install. The 06's all come with a built in CD player in the headunit. If you pay for the CD changer, than make him keep it in there. It is not a "either or" choice.

XM and a CD changer are not mutually exclusive. What is mutually exclusive is the ipod control from the headunit and satellite (XM or Sirius). You can have the CD, CD changer, satellite and MP3 play, but not control. The MP3 device plugs into the MP3 plug but you can only control from the MP3 device itself. There are several threads on this.

As to the satellite being in the headunit itself, I'm not so sure about this. But until I can confirm one way or another, I will withhold final comment. I know of at least one person who purchased with Sirius but wanted XM and it was switched at the dealer, but the headunit was not switched out. This leads me to believe it is a module somewhere. This is the same way that BMW does their satellite. BMW is committed to Sirius but you can get the XM instead. The headunit doesn't care - it's just looking for a signal. This leads me to believe its a module that is plugged into the back of the headunit. I'm still trying to confirm all of this.

I'm just not really interested in a cd changer or xm. Also, I don't want to pay for something I'm not going to use. As long as I have my Ipod, I'm fine!

then go phatbox man...its a hard drive in the trunk that will hold like 9 million mp3's(exag) it bolts up and wires up to where the trunk changer woulda been, thats what is in mine and its pretty sweet it is controlled through the head unit like the changer would have been !

Actually, I just spoke to my dealer & he says it's intergrated into the head unit. There is a sat button on the radio. Thanks for all of the input.

I've heard a lot of differing stories about this, too.
I thought that sat radio was a separate module... then someone convinced me that it was built into the HU. The really convincing part was... we pulled apart the dash and looked and looked for the receiver module... and just couldn't find one (even after following the wiring harness to hither and back). heezabadboy, if you know for certain that the receiver module is external... can you say where it is?

Also... the Phatbox is cool... but if he already has an iPod, there's no reason to go that route. You can control an iPod via the HU... and they come in sizes as large as the Phatbox'es DMC cart. Plus... maintaining the music library for both a PhatBox and an iPod ain't easy. They require separate library apps (SonicStage for the PhatBox and iTunes for the iPod), and you'd have to import a tune in two different places if you wanted it on both players. That would get old real quick.
If you don't already have an MP3 player... the PhatBox is great. With it's voice-sim menu and factory look. But there are enough options to integrate portable MP3 players into your car, that buying a PhatBox ontop of an iPod or a Rio would be overkill.

I have to agree with steinola on this one. Overkill by far.

The AUX connector should come on your 06. The satelite is most likely NOT built into the HU, but is controlled from there. It just utilizes the signal when it has one. Of course i dont know where the reciever would be, but who cares? The point was he doesnt want to pay for something he isnt gonna use, or pay for something that gets taken out. The car doesnt come with a CD changer, and just so you know, not all Package 2's come with SAT. Mine is a fully loaded car sans the satelite. I didnt want it, and it didnt have it anyway, so its the perfect car! I use my iPod and my CD player in the HU too much to even care about radio.

Talking good points

u made some very good points steinola...if im wrong i will admit it quick ( i will double check ) but the reciever is under the passenger side of the dash( what im told ) did u see where the antennae cable was plugged into the head unit ? as for the phatbox or ipod they r both way kool...u cant go wrong either way...im partial the phatbox because it works off the head unit for controlling ur music...besides its kool when u pop the trunk and people ask "what the hell is that" ! LOL
