Problems with 2001 Beetle

I'm a newbie here, looking for someone who has seen all the things that have been happening with the turbo beetle. I've had so much work done I've lost track. The latest thing is I was driving down the street and the clutch did not disengage, it just stayed on the floor. I stopped at a stop sign and could not get the car to move, it would only lurch, I was attempting to get out of traffic as I was almost hit, and the car made a very loud bang in the front. That was it, I turned off the key, had it towed. I don't go to the dealership, have been going to a very good mechanic, and he is looking at it. Because I've an avid driver I have more miles than most so am ahead of the learning curve on what goes wrong along the way with this car. I'm wondering if anyone else out there has had a similar problem and what it was. And is there somewhere else I should be posting this? Thanks!
