Finally acquired my "new" beetle (2002 Turbo S in black), after years of procrastinating!
Truth be told, I was searching for a TDI, but they all seemed to have extremely high (well, not for diesel's, but for me) mileage, and were almost exclusively equipped with automatics... Almost bought an '02 Turbo Double Yellow out of Boulder, Colorado (if you find this on craigslist.org, watch out - em me for details!), and while wrestling with "issues" on that transaction, stumbled across this one-owner, 9000-original-miles, mint condition Turbo S (still smells new) with what seems like every conceivable option - including a custom total-body cover - sitting forlornly in the little town of Alliance, Ohio. Seems that it sat on the dealer's showfloor for 18 months, as everyone down there was seeking an automatic transmission! The woman from whom I acquired this gem was given the car as a birthday gift in July of 2003 by her husband, and kept it as her "second car". Never ventured out in snow. Kept it covered in the garage. Hardly ever drove it. Never got any calls from postings in the Cleveland paper (some 60 miles distant) nor CarSoup... until after I'd offered to purchase it and wrapped the deal. Seems she had a teenager about to obtain a license, and the insurance would've sky-rocketed. So she sold it to me... For almost $1200 under loan value! Couldn't pass on that deal! So, set the cruise at 85-90 (with an occasional foray into slightly higher realms) and - with my son (also, a 2002 Turbo S owner) - enjoyed the next two days traveling the 1000 miles home. Stopped in Chicago for an overnight at my brother's and to take in the latest Pixar production - "Cars" (excellent, btw!). Extremely pleased with the @32 mpg economy we experienced. Found this site while searching for "moster mats" and a later-model, in-dash CD head end to replace the current Monsoon-with-remote-changer system. Great site - great to be here! Steve |

Talk about low mileage creampuff. Great find, great story! There is nothing like a high-speed carabug with a pair of Turbo S's
I test drove a bright red S before settling on the Riviera Blue. The extra oomph in the S was intoxicating, but an automatic was the transmission of choice, so there you go! This month "Moody Blue" cranked over 91K. |

Thank you all for the warm welcome!
Attached are the pictures sent to "lure" me to Cleveland... The Silver Turbo S is my son's - note the license plate! More to follow, as available... Steve |
