Does anyone have one or have this as a hobby? I'm curious to see how many people are into this and enjoy it as a hobby. This past weekend we were at a park with my kids and a guy had a Nitro RC car that went about 65mph through the field, and now I want one...it was awesome! He had brought some ramps and was jumping this thing 12 feet in the air. My 2 year old was enthralled with it and couldn't wait to get a closer look.

If there is anyone out there, do you have any recommendations for a first timer?

I'm a newbie myself, but I got a nice rig from someone that was moving.

Road car, electric motor, & all wheel drive.

Nothin' really to add, I play w/it from time to time. Just recently discovered we have a place that has R/C tracks. So I might start taking my car over there for lunch and learn how to drive in a controlled manner. ;p

I currently have a Traxxas T-Maxx... it's about 4 years old, has a bunch of hop-ups... upgraded suspension, gear box and other enhancements. It is a lot of fun, but being gas powered it requires a lot of maintenance, and a lot of space to run it in. Most parks around here don't like the gas powered RC cars, so other than my own property it's hard to find a place to run it... like the nitro it can sustain speeds in excess of 60 mph.

I don't really have any recommendations for a first timer. If you have R2R (ready to run) R/C's already, the next step is the big boys... there are powerful battery operated R/Cs that are easy to maintain (Traxxas has an equivalent E-Maxx chassis)... but the battery operated R/C's are heavier, you are limited by the charge on the battery etc... All R/Cs of this type are very expensive... for everything that has gone into my T-Maxx (Chassis, hop-ups, radio controller, body etc..) I have around $2k invested in it.

Some guys like to race R/C's but I have a 4x4 chassis that is more suited to running outdoors.

Thanks Otto!

I was looking at the Traxxas Nitro Rustler 2.5 ($295) or the Traxxas Jato 3.3 ($379) at a local Hobbytown USA. I'm also interested in the HPI Firestorm ($254) and HPI Hellfire ($589).

Which would you go with.?

Honestly, I am not familiar with those chassis to give you an opinion. See if the Hobby store has any demonstrators, or find a R/C track and see if anyone is running those chassis. If this is something that you are looking to try out and see if you like, then go with the cheapest setup you can find... if you like it and want to go bigger, sell the old one and get something else.

I started out with the E-maxx, decided I wanted to go gas... sold the e-maxx bought a t-maxx chassis.... During my time with the e-maxx I looked into upgraded radios and components so I knew how I wanted to upgrade.

My only complaint about the t-maxx, is that at speed in a full turn it will flip. The suspension geometry is designed for straight line jumping... I have seen demonstrations of the T-maxx flying off 50' ramps and landing with no damage. but in a full speed turn it trips over itself and does amazing flips end over end over end. no damage.

My cousin in AZ does this. He paints them himself and takes them to competitions. He's won lots of money racing cars and been in some RC Car magazines. I had no idea it was as big as it is!!

I didn't think about the demo stuff. The hobby shop I last went into in Atlanta had some very knowledgible people, so I'm sure they could help me find the right rig.

I ended up getting a Revo 3.3 this weekend and this thing is completely bad ass. I managed to get through the break in procedure after smoking a couple of glow plugs and dodging rain showers, but she's all ready to run now. I didn't have time to tune everything out, but it was awesome even at the factory settings.

I can't wait to get out this weekend, tune up the engine and do some major bashing. It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but it's my Christmas gift from my wife and family and it was highly recommended by the RC guys at the hobby shop.

You'll have to post pictures. My T-maxx was put away months ago... I only ran it a couple of times this past year. I have 5 acres of land out in the sticks that I run it on.

My boyfriend had a T-Maxx when I met him, he never did much with it, didn't trick it out or anything, he eventually sold it on ebay and got almost all his money back so don't worry about losing too much money. Now all we have is this truck

cute bunny, but what is he doing to that truck???

Otto, I'll post some pictures when I get a chance to get it out again. We only have about half an acre, but there are some good local parks with open fields.

Picked up a lil' Traxxas Nitro Sport this past weekend. Just to check out the nitro-side of things. Nothing wild, and no plans to build it up any, just gonna run around the park w/it soon.

Took up some on-road sedan racing and while I'm not setting top laptimes, I'm managing to keep it off the walls now.

i used to race 1/10 scale electric offroad and dirt oval (sprint car style). it was alot of fun, and a good time for my dad and i to "bond".

i sold all my stuff about 8 years ago.

2 years ago i bought a couple of old electric tamyia cars just so i could put them together, building the cars from the ground up was always my favorite part.
