What does your car smell like now? Paint?

On the smell--it does smell a little like paint. It's not bad, I'm febreezing every few days and venting the windows. It's not overwhelming and my clothes don't smell, but you can smell it. I think it is getting better--i think leaving the car in the sun in 100 degree weather doesn't help either.

The paint is holding up well so far. The only places that I need to touch up are some places that got scratched during the install. The paint seems very sturdy though, I kicked the door with my shoe accidentally and the door got dirty, but the paint was fine. I used Duplicolor Vinyl/Fabric in matte black. The whole project took 6 cans of paint.

If you decide on painting your interior, please keep in mind that the paint you should use should be a paint designed for plastic i.e. Krylon Fusion, Bulldog Black, and the paint that JBT used. Anything that's not for plastic will be a crap shoot. You don't want to invest hrs. on end to paint, only to have it chip and peel.

I've found that a good adhesion promoter will let you use most paints on most plastics...but you get what you pay for.

Try getting your whole car painted...it takes over a week to get rid of the smell...

Oh yeah, take some pics so we can behold the coolness of your work.

I checked out that link. SEM is an outstanding product. You'll be pleased at the final results. I just wished they made something for cloth seats. These tan seats are high-maintanence.

hey thanks scarab...we did the parking brake handle and one of the cup holders in the back just to scope it out. the paint stretches over the texture so i don't loose the actual feel of the surface...no sanding or primer necessary...just a good wash.

Yup, yup. Hence the BULLDOG BLACK- notice the label. Bulldog comes in clear as well.

Hi,
I was wondering if you also painted the upper door panel, u know the part where the door handle, lock switch, and mirror controller are? How did you take it out? On mine when I bought the car used, the paint of these panels came as matte black. I don't know if it's original cuz on my friend's yellow beetle, the paint is yellow and glossy. It would look so much slicker in glossy black. Do you guys think it's doable? What brand and kind of paint should I use? Thanks for any input !

I actually just asked the same question here: http://www.newbeetle.org/forums/show...148#post164148

Hoping for an answer...I don't like mine either.

As far as the upper door panel, yes it can be painted. And yes I painted mine, including the door handle/lock/mirror control portion. I went all out and removed every concievable part i.e. window control swithces and even the door handle area. Unfortunately, the top area of our door panels aren't a seperate entity- the top and the bottom are one.

To see the work I did, check out my pic thread. Scarab Y2k's 2000 Black 1.8t

Any further questions, I'll be happy to assist.
