Default Glitter paint/boat paint?

Okay, so Im at a loss. I LOVE the glitter effect and if I didnt have a doopy Golf I would glitter the crap out of it. -hugs Trooper to make sure he doesn't get his feelings hurt-

My problem has been finding a place to start. Where do I go? I havent met a paint shop that does it yet, but I havent looked in Phoenix either (this was planned for Lulu wayyyyy back in January of next year, but I didnt follow through because Jim thought it was uhm.. .flambuouyant). Do I just start at paint shops or should I talk directly to boat painters? Will they laugh at me if I want them to do a car?

Im sorry, but a twankly silver beetle would be the coolest ever. Lulu is in dire need of a respray as soon as I fix the rust on the hatch (Because its been a year and VW hasn't made any effort to help us despite bugging the CRAP out of them, I have the confidence I can do it myself before we go back to Missouri and it spreads like wildfire) so my question would be... can glitter clears be put OVER original clearcoat where its been well-loved, or is this something to go OVER fresh paint (thus, an entire body respray) and under a million cloats of clear?

If it can go over the original clearcoat, we're considering a light dusting of coarse silver glitter over the hips of the car and on the roof (so it looks like it just rained, we saw a truck like this and it came out NICE), OR the top section (roof and pillars) heavily glittered boat-style, OR a glitter "racing stripe"... glitter flames were discussed but.. Jim has to drive it LOL! If it requires a full-body respray, well. We're looking for a TDI beetle to nestle its way permanently into our "garage" and we'll just have to find one in a color I dont like

If it is an auto paint you would be looking for someone/paint that can shoot with alot of metal flake added to the base pigment.
Can you just shoot clear and metal flake...not sure, but I would guess they could.

As for the boat paint, not sure how they do that...but if you have a thick skin a few calls to body shops shouldn't hurt...I think everyone knows what you mean when you say boat sparkly paint.

I have a blue sparkly drumset if you need a drumset to match your repainted car.

I had a red sparkly drumset Sold it a lonnnng lonnng time ago

ARGH I hate making phone calls when I know Im going to get laughed at! Yeargh!

I was always under the impression that the glitter went in the clear, and then MORE clear went on top of it so it wasnt prickly. Thats a ton of clearcoat... hmm.

You are talking about a seriously large metal flake in it. Years and Years ago they made that drumset ... and I remember seeing this paint on cars back when Travolta first wore the white suit. I am not a painter, but have been looking to get a paint job on a del sol .... so I am sure you will probably have to find a custom shop for that kind of job to come out good and bring along at least 5 large bills .... or 50 smaller ones, or 5000 really small one$.

LOL Well I dont want the whole thing so twankly that Im breaking kids bnecks when I go by, more of an accent kind of a thing. And yeah, painting is expensive in general... thats not really the issue. The issue is finding someone to do it, finding the right design and color, and going from there And, on a side note, I think Ive found my shop

It'll look neat, since you put so much thought into it.

Ive wanted a car with super glittery boat paint for years. Im glad to see someone else has the love for glitter that I do. I so wanna see how yer car comes out when its done. I really like the glittery racing stripe idea. I also would love a silver beetle with super silver glitter. It would look like a disco ball and Im all over that!!

x2

Yes. I am also fond of the bassboat idea! My pal Gina, actually had a mustang with glittery silver! Her car was black, but she had 2 cups of silver glitter mixed in with the paint, and apparantly two cups = enough to coat the entire car to where you cannot see the black, it was nothing but bassboat. And so, we called her stang the bassboat. It was bea-utiful!.. until it was totalled.

But yes. I think you should go for it! Anything glitter = awesome. But..maybe i'm just a girly-girl. lol.

Good luck, if/when you get it I want to see how it looks!

You should be able to spray an acrylic clear over your car mixed with metal flake. I did this a few years ago to a VW bus that was painted purple. The owner wanted some green metal flake sprayed over it. The original clear coat surface will have to be wet sanded before adding any additional layers.

Boats actually have a Metal flake gelcoat which is thicker than paint. The depth in the finish is what gives it such a great look.
