Exclamation how to remove door panels? please help

i bought a used (and slightly abused ) 2001 beetle last week and want to install some new speakers, as none of them currently work.

i've figured out how to remove the rear side panels, but i'm not sure about the door panels. i want to make sure i take them off in a safe way so i don't end up breaking something! then i'd definitely have something to worry about.

any help would be appreciated!
thanks.

The door panels are pretty easy if you take your time. start by removong the inside door pull.(2) unscrew the star screws along the bottom of the door. (3) use a plastic pry tool to pull the panel away from the door starting at the bottom working up the sides. take care and work slow to keep from brealing the clips.( 4) emove trim around door handle. (5)be caeful pullpanel up out of window track and unhook wires to windows, locks, ect. Breif but hope it helps.

Roll the window down before you start.

1. Carefully use a thin screw driver to pry the handle cover off then remove the 2 Philips screws behind the cover.
2. Remove the 3 torx screws with a #20 driver
3. Start from the bottom of the panel and slightly pull it away from the door, there are about 4-5 grommets holding the edges of the panel to the door.
4. With the bottom pulled out lift the panel so that the top of it come off the door.
5. Undo the electrical connections at a (door marker light), b (gas and trunk switches), c (window switches), d (door lock and mirror), and e security led).
6. At d pull the black cable, at the end, till the end grommet slides out of the door handle then undo the hook from the handle.

Passenger side will be the same except there are not connections at b or e.

To put it back reverse the steps with some side notes.
A. When reversing step 4 it may be a little tricky lining up the door lock pin.
B. At step 3 (in reverse) once the top of the panel has been reseated correctly then just use your hand and hit near the side edges of the panel to seat the grommets.

This should help, if you need more clarification let me know and I can try to make some step-by-step pics.

i would love some more step by step pictures.

I got the door panel detached and now i am having issues with the wires keeping the panel connected to the door. I pretty much joined this forum for more clarification on this topic. I am worried i will break something or cut something or rewire it wrong!

thanks all

-Dann

Default Rear panels

Does anyone have the step by step process for removing the back panels, I assume that is how you get to the rear speakers.

how i did it:

-with seat in regular position loosen bottom of panel from around the seatbelt bar near the doorsill (will have to pop up the back part of the sill trim piece)
-start loosening panel up the doorjamb
-lift seat bottom and begin loosening panel from bottom up.

It's just held with the round snap-in clips like the front panels but with nothing to unscrew

thankfully the rear speakers are much easier to deal with than the fronts.. they just have screws.. no weird brackets and rivets.
