Default Need Help Rocker Panel Repair

I recently purchased a Black 2002 NB 2.0L automatic for my daughter's first car. It's a one owner (checked CARFAX) with 127000 miles. The interior is in very good shape, no tears or hole but needs a good detail cleaning to make it close to new.

The body is in good shape no dents and the paint is in good shape, except for the driver’s side rocker panel and the typical stone chips on the hood.

The rocker panel does not appear to be dented. But there is a large area that looks like a paint chip that has come off the drivers side rocker panel and you can see down to the primer coat. Also you can see a little bit of surface rust on the primer coat on one corner.

I would like to know is there anybody in the Southern Maryland area that could be willing to give me a hand on this repair. I would like to repair it myself, or provide me with some detailed instructions for me to follow.

I have order Touchup 123 to repair the hood paint chips and any minor scratches in the paint I find. I have also ordered a can of spray paint and clear coat from the local VW dealership that matches the NB color code to fix the rocker panel.

What other tools/supplies should I get to repair the rocker panel?

If you can help send me a PM.

Thanks
LuvBug122593 Dad

I will post pictures when I get the Beetle back from my mechanic next Wednesday.

Hey I post the pictures. These are from the dealership. I will get some closeups of rocker panel when I get the Beetle back today. You can barely make out what I am talking about. It's only the drivers side rocker panel.

i think you need some pictures of it out of direct sunlight. there's too much reflection and glare to see what's going on. It looks to me like there's a big stripe of white paint along the whole rocker panel, which i wouldn't count as "barely able to make out"

I have the same previous damadge on the otherside....My Plan 1. grind off paint in damadged area 2.weld some coat hanger pieces on all along the damadged area.3.Use a slidebar hammer attached to welded coat hanger to pull the dented area out.4. When you feel you've pulled it out enough remove coat hanger pieces.5.hammer down high stops lightly !!! 6. Grind down high spots 7.smooth on a thin layer of body fill.8 sand and repeat until smooth.9.Prime sand and paint.. Hope this helps....

FYI: I made a thread chronicling everybody's experience with rocker panel damage.

Try to track down a set of Votex sills. Paint them and throw them on after dealing with the rust.

Check out The Votex Appreciation Thread

You just need the part number and you can order it from your local dealer possibly, or one of the other sources in the thread.

Cheers
