Thumbs down trunk will not open

alright guys, i have been searching the org for several days now trying to find a way to open my rear hatch. i have a 1999 gls 2.0L and here's the skinny on what happens:

so you can turn the key in the hatch lock behind the swivel emblem and you hear the mechanism release. there is no "pop" that happens like there used to be. you cannot open the hatch. feels like either the lock never releases or something else. same happens when you use the trunk button on the driver's door, hear the lock release, you cannot open it. trust me i tried to pound it open with a 4 pound dead blow from the inside and nothing.

any suggestions on how to open her up? i have not taken apart the trim or anything yet to fiddle the the mechanisms, figured i would find help with more experience in the body of these cars than myself.

yes all the fuses are good, i am thinking that over time having the bump stops out of adjustment for so long, and repeated hard closing of the hatch itself has either broken something or caused the popper not to function correctly anymore i am just not sure.
