Default Issues with steering wheel spokes?

Does anyone else have this issue? The stock silver paint on the steering wheel trim has a tendency to get scratched. I tried to fix this with silver touch-up paint (like that used for wheels) and what resulted was a disaster! First of all, that trim is plastic, not metal as I believed. So when I removed my lousy-looking touch-up job, it also took off the factory paint! That would have been okay, because it's black underneath, but it was all uneven and melted (my paint remover must have contained acetone! Oops!) Anyway, I tried covering this up with chrome and black duct tape. That looked like hell, too. Now, my NB is in the body shop. They will have to remove the steering wheel and the attached airbag, mask it, sand down my botched job, and re-paint these pieces! But....to make things interesting, I'm having them use Cyber Green to match my body color. The moral? If you suck at painting as I do, it can be quite costly to remedy the problem.

Those spoke covers pop right off from what I have heard. Also, I recently saw someone here on the org that has decals to fit them in an assortment of colors. Dont spend a small fortune at the body shop.

I have also read that they pop off - but they don't always pop back on - many have had to glue them back on.
Here is the thread link for the vinyl cover - probably a better solution!

here's a link to the steering wheel spoke how-to...if you decide to do it yourself, take hestersu & animex's advice and GENTLY pry the spokes apart...it'll pay off in the long run.

Steering Wheel Spoke - How-To

i've repainted my spokes twice now...latest is blue with a few layers of clear coat.

Well, I wish I had read the entire contents of this post before doing what I did. I ended up paying a body shop $200 to remove the steering wheel and paint the spokes! It looks nice, though..... Of course, with my mechanical skills, I would have probably trashed the spokes trying to get them off, anyway.
