Default Blizzards and the splash shield.

Due to all of the snow around here, something must have pulled my splash shield down or made it sag. Before it started dragging on the ground I brought it into VW to have a peek/put it back up.

Two nights later after getting gas, I swear I hear something dragging. I pull into my driveway, and yes, looks like a piece fell off. I think it was from the back, towards the drivers side? It was late, and in the dark. I went to peek/place it back, but it simply fell off into my hands.

Suggestions on what I should do? The rest of the shield is still intact, just really held together tight because it's worn at this point.

I kinda want the metal splash shield from dieselgeek, but I'd have to get the sides too, right? That's expensive.

VW quoted me $148 on a new plastic one. Not bad.

I am not used to driving a low car anymore, between my Dodge Ram and the 4Runner our Beetle is like sitting on the pavement. However I have not ran into a situation where I hit her belly on anything yet (knock on wood) and there are no dirt roads around here so.

Based on the info I've gotten from reading your posts seem like a very experienced and careful young driver and I wouldn't spend my money on a metal skid plate. I'd replace the plastic one just for peace of mind and to know my car is complete (if that makes any sense to you) and save the rest towards any other need the bug may have in the near future.

Our winters in NJ are not this bad anymore and hopefully this is not gonna be a new trend for us. You got away cheap with just the plastic cover, I clipped some one's infinity last Saturday trying to yield at a plow truck amongst the mountains of ice and snow on the streets by me and yanked the whole front bumper guts and all. I must have caught it just right because I caused around $2K in plastic damages

Haha, well it's either the bug or one of my classic cars. I'd rather risk the bug, since the 60's are irreplaceable in a way. There are plenty of dirt roads here in SJ (I live near a lot of farms, the REAL garden state!) but I do avoid them.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the plastic one. It would probably be better to do this ASAP, in case my oil pan is out in the open (I don't think it is, but I haven't had time to see it on the lift after that chunk of the shield came off).

You're silly! It's just a Saturn

Na-ha INFINITY I know, I forget there still beauty to be found in NJ. I work in Norteastern NJ most of all, and don't see many farms or dirt roads around. That's my kind of turf and that'd be my lifestyle if I had the cash

Replaced it with the OEM plastic. Not bad.

Then I found out my pass side axel boot is torn.

YAY

Your driving ability doesn't have anything to do with needing a metal skidplate. You can hit a chunk of ice or a rock and there goes your oil pan. Why buy the plastic piece at all? It doesn't really protect your oil pan from much. I had to replace it once before I bought a real one, when I could have just saved my money and bought a real one from Dieselgeek.

And no, you don't need to buy the side skirts.

My plastic shield has come off for the last time and will not be replaced. It doesn't really protect anything and is more of a PITA than a help. So.. ya.

It does more than you think. I don't have the money for a metal one, so poo poo~

LOL, a band...

You asked for suggestions.

Plastic piece (it is NOT a skidplate) for $148. Installation included? Dealer charged me $250 installed.

Dieselgeek aluminum skidplate for $300 (includes shipping). VW mechanic charged me $50 to install.

Easy decision. $250 over and over gets expensive fast, plus a new oil pan? Yikes. My plastic piece fell off in pieces after the screws fell out one by one. It was a hazard and a PITA.
