Question What part is this and where to get it cheap? Bulb holder inside turn signal lense

Got into a minor fender bender and broke the passenger side front turn signal lense. I ordered another one on ebay, about $22 shipped. Link to item.

Anyway, when I did the 30 second swap out, it appears the "Socket" that holds the orange turn signal bulb was previously broken and fixed with some black tar or something. It has lost some of the clips and does not stay in place when you twist it into the hole.

I made it work anyway but my wife who is driving the car, says it blinks super fast half the time.

I think the first step is to just get a new bulb holder, which seems to snap onto the wire, and then plugs into the lense thing.

You can see I am VERY technical in my knowledge of what this is all called.

What is the best/cheapest way to get the bulb holder part? Do I need a part number, is it perfectly cheap to go to the dealer, is there an online place for something like this cheap? Does anyone have an extra to just sell me?

Thanks!!

go to a junk yard and hack one off a car and wire it in. I doubt you'll be able to get one from the dealer without buying the whole wiring harness it is connected to. good luck.

It looks like the bulb holder actually is removable and snaps onto the wiring itself. They are different colors, too. Any other thoughts on this? And is there a repair book that lists part numbers for every new beetle part with diagrams, online somewhere or in a pdf?

I replaced both of mine on the rear of my '98 (the brake light/running light in my case). I bought them from 1stvwparts.com with something else, the problem is the shipping is $8.95 or more per order. So your best bet may be to go to the dealer and ask for just the socket for the right front turn signal. Take yours in with you, just undo it from the wire, there is a little clip that holds it on.

I checked with the dealer. They want $20 plus tax for that stinkin part.

I just replaced 3, I feel your pain.

Junkyard ones aren't worth your time. They all seem to get brittle and break after a few years of service. Investing in some LED bulbs would solve that though.

I think that mine for the rear were $10 each + shipping. Just call 1stvwparts.com and ask them.
